DR rubbish on another forum
      #240776 - 17/01/14 08:33 AM

Thought you all would enjoy a laugh.
This was extracted from one of the other forums....and in my view represents lack of understanding of the subject, yet will be viewed as somehow totally valid

"Never hear the 458 and 416 rem as being "problematic" in double rifles. The belted case was designed ESPECIALLY for such use in stopping rifles.

i reload for the 8x57R and the 30-06 (rimless in double rifles). No real problems.

The double rifle is probably a historic/nostalgic thing!!! I certainly bought mine for a nostalgic reason, and preferred to take my m700 custom 416 to Africa for dangerous game.

If you look at the BRNO Stopper (one of my doubles) I think your will find it in both the 458 and 416 rem mag.

The 416 Rigby is not considered a good double rifle cartridge DGR or just a light general purpose rifle; as that is a rimless case.

Only reason I can glean on the "problematic' issue is that double rifles are usually a "Brit Thing". and both the 416 rem and 458 win are strongly American. The 458 and the 416R are probably the top two cartridges used in Africa by Phs. The 416 is chosen mostly by PHs under 50; with the 458 by Phs over 50. reasons they are available in quality inexpensive guns ( Rem 700 and Ruger 77) and are in bolt guns. PHs using backup rifles for DGR SELDOM IF EVER use double rifles. Being a PH is a profession, and money is the goal. Double rifles in Africa are hung on the wall, SOLD, or used in TV commercials...seldom carried.

i did borrow a client rifle in 470 NE on a Safari, decent rifle and was good on baboons; but I'd rather have a 458 3 shot bolt gun for lion or elephant. But the ejectors were cool! Seeing those tube eject like a 12 ga 3 inch shotgun double."

I agree, and that it is analogous to so much of what is getting onto the net....in some instances (bad Science...such as causes of global warning) is going to be harmful to the next generations in the decisions they make

Yes, a significant load of poop. I'll note that my 470 is really only a baboon gun though...........

Amen brothers....if this had been one something originated over on the "Double Gun" forum, I do believe their server would have blown up, and the originator would have been pursued ,and taken hostage for eventual beating and the rack.......

Agree.

Many people often comment on subjects on which they have close to no real experience or knowledge.

Too often in life, I find that those who know the least, speak the loudest, which says something about human nature, I think. Additionally, too often those who know the least, listen to those who are speaking the loudest, again, something about human nature.

On the other hand this could be a very smart man. Remember when it was said that to shoot a firearm with a damascus barrel was to invite disaster, then of course buy the said firearm for next to nothing. Who knows, could just be his way of trying to score a cheap double.

It happens on all forums but on different topics.

I remember one forum full of newbies. One guy joined and was asking the most basic questions - What do you think of this .22? Where can I shoot rabbits? What's the first centrefire I should get?

Six months later, he was answering questions and giving advice on buffalo rifles and calibres, water buffalo hunting etc. All without actually hunted more than a couple goats ...

NE is fantastic because we have such knowledgeable members, experienced people in some many different areas, numerous gunmakers including people from the big name firms, hunters amateur and professional who have hunted almost everything on Earth.

It sometimes intimidates new guys but I hope they are treated kindly always. I find it hard to go to some forums due to the sorts of answers people get there, either arrogant, or ignorant.

Well done to the members here.

Thanks John, following the stage you've set:

I'm one of those new guys (despite being a member for several years) whos hunted very little, a couple foxes, a couple cats, a few roos, about a thousand pigeons and a few hundred rats

When i first joined I was just some 18 year old punk dreamin' big. Plenty of great answers, even though i never put any to practice in the end. This forum is the inspiration to getting my first big bore, even if it was just a Zastava in .458 Win Mag, there's still a heck of a discussion thread even though its not a "classic" rifle, or worth several thousand. I love when the people who own those expensive guns post the other things they have tucked away in the safe, the ones they carry often that are generic things, Remingtons in .308 and the like. It's also the inspiration to my now moving into the vintage arms, the first being a .450 Nitro bolt action by Cogswell and Harrison (Certus).

So i can say "screw you guys" for making me poorer, but it's been fun!

Another thing i'll say, even though its off topic, is that none of you guys post or act in an intimidating fashion to new people, or those inexperienced. We don't seem to get people who get the answer and go "No, i want this answer instead.". Don't know why, might say something about the people here attracts.

As John said, good work guys. All give yaselves a pat on the back.

PS: There also seems to be a lot of trust on the forum amoungst members, taking orders without money up front etc at personal financial risk (Thinking of you, John, with the book orders, thanks for those).

I love being here because I have got to learn so much from the many experienced hunters and experts who participate here. There are many of us who have hunted a bit, but could not own many guns for various reasons. It always helps to learn from those who have been there and done it. And, when someone shares pictures of a beautiful double rifle or high end bolt or levergun, I think it has an inspirational value for us. We know that we can;t all shoot for the stars, but, if we tried, we could climb a mountain. Keep the inspiration and advice coming, and thank you!

Ditto's to all,
This forum is firstly about the knowledge and fun involving Double Rifles. I got hooked after to many years of bolt actions, and then reading about removing some of the mysteries concerning the art of actual "Hunting" not shooting with a double rifle.....The rest is all Mikes fault, now I broke and routinely nursing my shoulder.

Keep it up Mates!!

This forum was the first internet forum I have been involved with. I had assumed they must all be full of polite helpful and knowledgeable people until I went on some others that dealt with some of my other interests in life. I was somewhat stunned to see the level of arrogance and abuse some of these sites dish out. I read some of the others but this is the only forum I feel comfortable participating in.
Cheers

Well, speaking as newbie, I am very sure that my doubles are only good for scaring a rabid chipmunk!! A bolt action loudenboomer magnum is the only thing that's suitable for anything larger.
Sorry, I just had to say that. My favorite double rifle is an ancient Sauer in 43 Mauser. I've trusted that over any other rifle for MOST hunting in this part of the world. And I'd use my 500bpe on just about anything else.
The internet experts are everywhere on every subject imaginable...

I wish some of those rubbish double rifles where here so I could help the rubbish collectors get them off the market and make it easier for folks to use their much superior push feed bolt rifles!
