Wolf attacks jogger in Canada!

Do any of you over in NA know if this is something that has happened before (in reasonably recent times)?

Erik

Actual documented attacks upon humans by wolves are rare......and so rare that I'm not sure they exist at all.

Folklore aside one is hard pressed to find such an event.

rare, certainly. But there are several cases where it has occured. The cases I have heard of are mostly up in my neck of the woods. You are more likely to have a mountain cat take you out than a wolf, but there are those exceptions.

Happens here in Alaska every couple of years or so. Doesn't mean anything other than wolves are wild animals. We have more moose attacks than from bears or wolves.

Vapodog,

My guess would be:

1) mountain lion

2) Bear

3) sharks

4) wolves.

In that order.

Erik

Vap,
Any animals or game animals?

If any are included (including insects) I'd say bees and probably dogs. Or maybe snakes.

If game animals (hunting related deaths), I'd say whitetailed deer are probably the Numero uno killer because of deaths while pursuing them (falls from treestands and other hunting injuries) and car collisions. Number two, I have no idea.

#1 is deer primarily involving auto accidents
#2 is the bee.....many folks are allergic to the sting

All the commonly thought of animals are way way down on the list

Vapodog,

Seem to have misunderstood you there. I though you meant nr. 1 and 2 out of the 4 you listed (bears, wolves, sharks and mountain lion).

But then you can perhaps tell me in which order the 4 above mentioned animals rank (however far down they are on the list of all possible animals like bees, deer etc.)? I'm still guessing the order I posted, but might be wrong.

Erik

Out of that list there I would say in this order:

bear
cougar
shark
wolf

I have no stats to prove this, and actually I have no idea about sharks. Cougar attacks don't always end in a death either, they are often killed and the attacked person has wounds to heal from.

Bears are definitely the main one around here. I meet up with piles of bears each summer and have not had an incident yet, so those too are rare given the number of encounters.

I wonder if wolf attacks were more common before the use of repeating firearms or firearms in general. I imagine a determined and hungry wolf-pack would not be easy to deal with, with bladed weapons.

Actually I've read some good stories about exactly this same thing and it seems that folklore is in love with the wolf for the wolf makes marvelous stories......but in reality the wolf towards man has been somewhat friendly over the centuries. As I said earlier documented attacks on man by wolves are extremely rare.
Interesting thought as to before the pen was used to record events.....and prior to firearms.....but even then the available history favors the good relationship of wolves toward man.....not necessarily vice versa however as it's fur has been prized forever and it's been snared, trapped and hunted in every manner known.

Most of the historical incidents, folk-lore or not, often dealt with hard times, when game was short or the winters were especially bad.

And of course stock was the main targets and were protected by shepherds/herders.

Don't know if they were fantasy or not.

Interestingly the "werewolf" today is depicted as an evil creature but in early German and Scandanavian culture the werewolf was a hero who turned himself into a wolf to raid and harass the enemy during invasions.

eg in the "Siegfried" legends "Sigismund" and (?) turn themselves into wolves to harass and take revenge.

I was hunting up around Hudson Hope when one morning we woke up to helicopters. A hunter had been mauled about 20 km's from where we were, and each year there seems to be more bears (grizzlies). We had one come in on us when we were skinning and quartering a moose, though it was young and kept it's distance. We were just loading up and got the hell out of there. The gov't should grow a pair and issue more permits or open the season again. It was closed for political reasons (I know you know, just telling the others). There is a lot of talk among hunters to just shoot, shovel and shut up and a lot of old timers say "the only good bear is a dead bear". All this said, I am more apprehensive about cats than bears.

In Wyoming there is currently a great deal of discontent among the locals outside of the Yellowstone basin due to the current situation with the wolves. They are hard on the livestock and domestic pets. Attacks on humans while rare do happen, but the liberally biased media usually doesn't say too much. In 2003 our family backpacked the Absoarka range in Yellowstone and we heard wolves almost every morning. I can honestly say that it was worth the 40 mile hike to hear them from the tent!
