While I am not much of a shotgunner or a muzzle loader, I thought this particular gun just speaks to me. Also, this is a gun that the little kids of the family really enjoy looking at.
Sorry for the picture quality - taken with my phone.

I really like the touch of the shadowlines on the edge of the buttplate.

I will get some better pictures up as soon as I can.
Its greatest flaw is that the horn trigger guard is broken and of course, the piece is missing...
I imagine it had a fancy scroll but I could have it repaired with a straight piece of horn which would still look pretty good.
That, and there is some filler here and there in the stock but overall, a great piece to just hold and admire.

Usually I don't like heavy carving on a gun, but I do like this one. Well done.

Thank you for showing us your early piece of German firearms art. I'm really intersted in seeing how the lock mechanism is arranged, I haven't seen another like it. Have you ever had it apart? I agree with the others, very cool!

With the retailer down toward CZ/Prague, it has a Lovely Bohemian flare. Similar dragon hammers are seen on Herzberg/Hannover examples from the same period. I'm curious if the indicators note the lock is in batter or what and if the precious metal barrel bands are platinum(platina)or sliver? Last, I'd hazard a guess that on the underside of the tubeset there is a date stamp.

Kind Regards,

I'm confident that is a patented action, but I can't place it for now; maybe Anton Vincent Lebeda of Prag or who.

He sourced tubes from St. Etienne and I'm sure other parts of France, along with other pattern welded tube making centres, so I'm curious if these tubes were sourced from Leopold Bernard of Paris?

A wonderful example of the "higher end" in firearms art.
Quite a piece - that would be nice to own.
Thanks Huvius.

I had the opportunity to get more pictures of this gun today.
The proofs are quite battered but look Belgian. There is nothing else stamped on the barrels.
I cannot find any proofs or marks on the action at all.

This boxlock arrangement is known in German speaking countries as "Prager Kammerschloss = Prague chambered lock", as it was invented there by Antonin Vincenc Lebeda (1795 1857). Prague and Bohemia was then part of Austria. His 1829 Austrian Privileg (Austrian word for patent) was not valid in the various German or other European states, so the design was widely copied. By 1850 it was in the public domain anyhow. As Leipzig is quite close to the Czech border and the Bohemian Gunmaking center Weipert directly behind this border, IMHO Edel had some of the work done there.
August Wilhelm Edel(1799 - 1865),Hainstrasse 5, Leipzig, was first mentioned as a Büchsenschäfter = stock maker, later as a gunmaker.

Axel:
Thanks for taking the time to confirm my suspicions. I too would hazard a guess it was sourced from one of the Bohemian gunmaking centres being either Praze or Vejprty/Weipert. Anton Vinzenz Lebeda, I have him born on May 1st, 1797 and departing this life on July 2nd, 1857. Just a couple years different in birth. Anyway, the tubeset looks to be sourced from Liege and interesting alignment marks.

Kind REgards,

Huvius,

Thank you for taking the time to take and post more pictures of this very interesting example. I like the robustness of this early box-lock design. The inner workings appear to have held up well over the years as evidenced by the crispness of the tumblers and sears. Proper hardening and tempering of these components as well as the springs is key to their longevity so I smile and marvel at the expertise of these master craftsmen. An artful, interesting and fun specimen for sure.

Thanks again,

Mark

PS - By chance when you were taking pictures did you take any of the trigger set and side-plates? I'll blame the latter question on my seemingly endless curiosity.

WOW. This is the first time I'vehad a chance to see one of those very late mechanisms out of the gun. It's NOTHING like I imagined it would be! Very nice.

I hate to add on another request on an old thread, but were there any pictures of the whole gun and pictures of the entire inlet for the lock mechanism? I've seen this on double rifles too and I'm very curious about how it transfers the recoil. It don't immediately see any large surfaces for the force to transfer too.

Thanks again for putting that up.
