Lyman Peep sight dovetailed into firing pin nut
      #240116 - 04/01/14 06:55 AM

I have this adjustable Lyman Peep sight dovetailed into a 1908 M-S firing pin nut that I don't need and I think I will sell it. However, I need a non-inletted firing pin nut to replace it on the rifle. If you have one perhaps we can arrange a partial swap or/and does anyone know where a firing pin nut can be obtained? (Does Greek military fit?) It will be necessary to swap firing pin (shortened for sight dovetail) as well as nut to ensure smooth acting safety. Let me know if you have any ideas on this.

Assuming the Greek military firing pin nut will fit, Numrich wants $15. for one and $41. for shipping!!!! Plus, there will be Canadian taxes and import duties. Plus, I may not be able to get it shipped across the border anyway...So thats not happening.

Read your PM and replied.

I never thought of the firing pin having to be shortened, if at all. Please explain...dimensions are only externally changed by the dovetail. I imagine this would necessarily be used with a post war M/S that has the extra safety, so the peep sight would not interfere with the use of the bolt safety. Am I wrong in this assumption?

Ron

The firing pin has to be shortened (at the rear) because the sight dovetail cuts in deeply to the firing pin nut and therefore into the rear end of the firing pin. This refers to the pre-war
M-S...I don't know anything about its application to post-war M-S.

As I wrote before, firing pins and firing pin nuts, cocking pieces and wing safeties are all the same from the M1903 to the last post-war Mannlicher-Schoenauers. The post-1952 side and top tang safeties were merely add-ons. They only block the sear without any change in bolt assembly design.

Pictures of the disassembled bolt should make the issue clear. Note cutdown firing pin to fit dovetailed (for sight) firing pin nut, etc.

The Lyman sights were originally sold with a pre-dovetailed spacer that was meant to be screwed onto the firing pin nut (drilling and tapping for two screws required). This obviated any need to shorten the firing pin.
