Jerusalem artichoke?

Saw some Jerusalem Artichoke in the store today, but have never tried them. Anyone know how to prepair this vegetable?

Erik,

If I remember correctly, the Jerusalem artichoke is a root, to a North American wildflower. I would boil it, like a potato for eating. Treat it as if it were a potato.

I am a garlic freak so any potato I make is loaded with it. If I mash the potato, I add some cream cheese along with the garlic to smooth it out. Some milk will also work but won't be as good.

Add what ever spices you like and it should be fine.

Let me know how it works out.

Ann,

I tried them boiled (like a potato) and they tasted very simular to artichoke hearts! Very yummy! We dipped them in melted butter mixed with a squeeze of lemon.

Later that evening a strange reaction occurred. So I went onto the internet to research a bit and found out that they are known to create copious amounts of flatulence! And I mean enough gas to power a small European country for a decade!

Thank God we didn't have a fire going, or any candles lit. The likey resulting explosion would have destroyed half of Oslo, and created a tremendous forest fire! Endangering the lives of a hundred thousand innocent people!

However, there is supposedly a way to avoid this when prepairing them. I just haven't found out how yet... I'd like to though, cause the taste was great!

Howabout if you be my guinea pig, and try prepairing some differant versions for me over on the otherside of the Atlantic? Just to spead out the environmentally unfriendly emissions?

I had no idea they caused gas. I've never eaten them. However, it might be a good way to seek revenge on all of my male coworkers. I could "crop dust" them one day here and send them packing.

I eat low carb so I rarely have such problems anyway.

I say go for it! And if that's your devious plan, then the Jerusalem artichoke is perfect for your needs! Don't forget to wear earmuffs for your own hearing protection...

That's the whole point in crop dusting....silent but deadly!

Anyway, this is supposed to be a food and drink forum! We best change the subject. So what kind of beans do you get in Scandanavia?

Unfortunatly for your wily plan, the Jerusalem Artichoke has quite the opposite effect. It only results in a previously unheard of high noise level. Simular to a 100.000 ton ships foghorn.

If the Victoria Falls is known locally in Zimbabwe as "The Smoke that thunders", the J.A. would be known as "The Root that thunders"...

Like I said, wear hearing protection.
