Who is from the"Mid Atlantic Region" of the USA?
      #23873 - 11/01/05 02:59 AM

Gentlepeople:

I chatted with Chasseur the other day and he suggested that we see if there would be an interest for double gunners from the mid atlantic region of the the USA (New York to South Carolina) to get together for a double rifle shoot.

So, if you could respond 1) where you are located and 2) if you would be interested in having a shoot on a Saturday (sometime in the future) somewhere central to most of the people in this area.

I am in Fairfax County, Viriginia (Just outside Washington DC) and I would be interested in a shoot like this.

Hiya Clark,

As we discussed earlier. I live Fairfax county too.

Be up for any Saturday shooting, and maybe a hunt in November.

I normally shoot either at an Izak Walton in Damascus, MD, the NRA in Fairfax, VA, or Clark Brothers in Warrington, VA. I am up to traveling a bit though.

Awesome. After we see what the interest would be, I'll send a message out to all interested parties and see what dates would work--probably aiming for springtime.

All us neighbors here in Fairfax Co. huh...Since I don't have a double and only use single shots. I could join you for 1/2 the day, pun fully intended.

Hi guys,

Don't forget me over here in the Virginia mountains.

I'll show if able to schedule. I can even suggest some facilities in this area. We have some pretty good shootiing ranges that are absolutely free to use!

Foxfire, I got your PM on this. Thanks for the heads-up.

You guys should remember the Vintagers shoot in September in Millbrook, NY. That get-together is a blast.

Best,

Would never forget about you! I'm up for any suggestions on a place that would be rather central to all people interested.

Right now just testing the water to see what kind of interest there would be. If there is a good amount, I'd like to see if we could plan something a few months out (springtime).

Sounds like this is getting cooking!

Not been to the Vintagers yet, but want to go one day.

There is also the Southern SxS shoot in NC in April. I'm planning on going. Its a shotgun shoot, but are others thinking about it?

Guys,

I think it would be a hoot to have a get-together from NitroExpress.com. It would be hard to beat the Vintagers. That gathering is one of the better opportunities of the year, and they have two levels of double rifle competition - stopping rifles, and stalking rifles. Of course, they do scads of shotgun competition too. All the while you are surrounded by top-notch vendors with double rifles and double shotguns like you have never seen. That setting requires no planning or effort on our part. You just show up.

My wife enjoys going too.

Foxfire, it happens in your back yard. You shouldn't miss it.

As for me, I live in the boonies and shoot something just about every weekend. You Fairfax County boys could just skip down some time, and we'll bang away. I have a shooting buddy who lives near Staunton and belongs to a fine gun club. That's not too far, maybe 2 1/2 hours for you.

Depending on the size of the group, there are lots of options.

CptCurl

That does sound like a good idea. I wanted to go last year, but September was too tight for me. This year it might be an option. If we could get some nitro guys together that'd be even better.

If you have good place we could do a "preliminary" nitro shoot in the Old Dominion that'd be fun.

What say you guys?

(Though I'll have to finally finish with my new loads)

A short note to all from the Mid Atlantic region...
Gents, please do NOT forget about the April 30, shoot at Big Rock range in south eastern INDIANA. It will be the first shoot of "CADS". Classic & Action Doubles Society. We will be using double rifles, double shotguns, and double action revolvers. Please give me a shout for the rules packet. Come and play, have a ball with others of "like" interests. SP2

CptCrl,

You seem to have the best setup for a "first local informal shoot" for us.

What/when dates might work for everyone? I figure just a simple get together, shoot and oogle at each other rifles and the such. No real competition, unless people want. Then we can start planning about the Vintagers in September as was suggested.

What do you guys think?

Great! Where do you shoot?

Are you going to the Southern SxS in Sanford, NC, hosted by Bill over at Deep River? I went last year though I did not shoot. I was thinking about shooting in it this year.

Great!

Maybe what we can do next is to ask if there are some general times of the year that is best for people and how far they want to go.

I am pretty open for times and dates. Summer in best for me, but can swind trips on weekends. Don't mind driving and seeing new places, give us an excuse to see parts of the US we haven't seen.

So we MARDRS (Mid-Atlantic Region Double Rifle Shooters) have two questions to put to vote;

(1) Location: VA or SC

(2) Best month/dates:

All:

My vote is for Virginia. It's central to the area. Cpt. seems to have the inns for a place.

As far as weeks go. I vote for spring. Maybe April. Not too hot, not too cold.

Thanks Clark, I didn't want to be the first to vote,

I am very similar to you:

Place: VA, I'm biased since I live here

Date: before it gets too hot, so April or May is excellent.

Hey guys,

Virginia and spring suits me too!

I seem to be fairly central. Bonanza is something on the order of 4 1/2 hours south, and Chasseur and clark7781 are about 3 1/2 hours north.

There is a dandy shooting range in Bath County between Warm Springs and Millboro that is almost always idle. It is an amenity of the George Washington National Forest and lies in a really pretty and remote area. That might just be our best location. It is about 40 minutes west of Lexington on Route 39. The shooting positions are covered and the range extends to 100 yards. It's a fine place to shoot and costs nothing at all. It just stands there open to the public. I have been there numerous times and I think only once was anybody else there.

There's also a GW Nat. Forest range about 1 1/2 miles from where I live, just off Exit 21 of I-64. It gets steady use. My friend has a private range that might be available too.

Just making suggestions.

Regards,
Curl

Ooops,

Foxfire, I didn't mean to leave you out. You are about 10 hours away, or so. But I bet there isn't much shooting opportunity up there in NYC area.

I'm a hick, so have the best opportunity.

About half of Alleghany County is National Forest, believe it or not!

CptCurl:

I like your ideas. I game for anything, but it will have to be a day trip for me (leave in the morning, shoot a lot, then drive home later.

I would recommend a 12:00 Noon start time with us plan on shooting for a few hours, share stories, admire each other's guns, etc.

Cpt, maybe you can even think of a place for lunch or something.

On another note, not to prevent any non-double owners from going, I think that we should also make it a big bore shoot. And extend the invite to anyone on this forum to bring their guns and shoot. I know my pop, Doc52 AKA Old Fart, would probably like to come. I'll have him bring his AR-50 .50 cal. That is a HOOT to pop off!

Just my two cents.

April/May works for me. Preferably on a Saturday.

Clark and CptCurl,

It sounds like this is starting to come together.

12:00 noon, weekend shoot in April, by CptCurl's place. How does that strike everyone? It suits me fine

I think the "big bore"/Nitro forum shoot is a good idea too. Opens it up to others.

Question remains of what type of shoot do you want to do? Some of our Aussie friends and the DRSS guys have made some good suggestions about making the shoot "more than punching paper". I like some of the ideas, but I've never done something like this before.

What are your thoughts?

Chasseur:

I'm game for just getting together and slinging rounds down range initially. But if the group wants something more organized, I'm game for that too.

I would make one recommendation, however. I would ask that each participant bring some extra rounds so other people can shoot their guns. (If they are comfortable with that.) One thing about this that I'm looking forward to is seeing everyone elses doubles. And if you allow me to shoot it, even better!

Everyone will be more that allowed to handle and shoot my .500. I'll bring my .416 Rem too and I'll have my father come down that weekend (he's in Philadelphia) and bring his .50 BMG (AR-50). The .375 H&H (Winchester Model 70) will come too.

Does that sound like too much?

Sounds good.

I think a open shoot each other's guns and get to know each other is a good idea for a first shoot. I especially like the idea of shooting new guns. I'll bring plenty of rounds for the 9.3x74r.

Should this be big bore rifle only? I do a lot of shotgun shooting. So I can bring double shotguns too if people are interested.

Hey guys,

If we kick this thing off at noon, and we begin with lunch, just how much shooting do you think can be done in one afternoon and still get you fellows back home to momma at a decent hour?

I'm hearing big rifles, little rifles, .50 BMG, and now shotties! In the meantime we are going to drool over and fondle each other's toys, yuk it up, and get to know each other. In April, even on DST it will be dark by 7:30 p.m.

I say this with a chuckle, because every time I get with my friends to shoot I take three or four guns and wind up shooting one or two.

By the way, we obviously won't have any "charging elephant" setup, but aside from shooting paper, I think it is great fun to murder various jugs full of water. Gallon milk or other jugs, liter Coke jugs, 2 liter jugs, etc. Different sizes for different ranges. They blow spectacularly when hit.

So I say we shoot paper and jugs unless somebody has a better setup or idea. The Bath County range is suited to that out to 100 yds. Everybody will need to save jugs for the event.

Wadduthink?

Well when you put it that way 12-7 sounds short
I like the all guns/no guns idea.

We could maybe make it a little earlier? Say those who can get together arround 10, and then the serious shooting starts at 12:00? Just a thought.

If its April neither the weekend of the 7-10, nor the 22-24 work for me. I'm out of town those two weekends. May is pretty much all open.

I like the jug idea. I'll start savining milk jugs now.

Dear Friends,
I'm not Mid-Atlantic, I'm a Hoosier. But I'd sure like to attend the shoot you are planning. As a match director for 15 years I might offer some advice. Check the weather history for the week-end you are planning...if you have had a history for rain during that period, you might want to pick a different week-end. Also, I might be able to bring some steel targets. They "ring" nicely and don't have to be re-set. (thus a time saving factor) Please keep me informed as to the date and place. (also, don't forget the CADS shoot April 30 here at Big Rock Range. SP2

Southpawtoo,
I'm sure you would be welcome though I'm not part of the organizing team. But check out "Frighttening Experience posted under Big Bores" before any more steel target shooting.

SouthPawtoo:

You are more than welcome to join in on the fun! I posted it as "Mid-Atlantic" figuring that people from Australia, California and other parts wouldn't be interested in a shoot in the neck of the world. I may have assumed too much and for that I apologize.

I'm game for anything we do that day! As long as we have fun!

CptCurl is out of pcoket until next week, so when he gets back we'll pick a day out.

Hey guys, I've been posting about a shoot in March at my range for DR shooters. I did not get a single response. However, when I mentioned hosting it earlier - everyone was up for it. Now that I have the range for that day no one is interested. The shoot is in charlotte NC on march 12, I must have at least 5 shooters to host this, otherwise I'm canceling it.

Bonanza,
I've not been ignoring you or your plans for a shoot. Quite the contrary, I'd love to come to SC. It would be a long drive but I'm up for it. Trouble is though, I run a Cowboy Action shoot here at Big Rock Range. We shoot on the second and fourth Saturdays from Feb. - Nov. Anything on the first or third Saturday I could maybe attend. Truly I wish the best for you and the shoot. SP2
