Big Bore Caliber Ammo & Reloading Tips
      #23862 - 10/01/05 11:43 PM

What are the most common to obtain Big Bore Calibers in your neck of the woods?458,416,470?Is ammo hard to get off the shelf and how much does a box cost?Iam getting into these big rounds and finding out factory loads are way costly.WHY?How much will I save by reloading?Half the cost?The416 rigby here in the usa is about 125.00 for 20 rounds.416 remington about 90.00 and the 458 federal premiums about 50.00-70.00 depending on the loading.I feel i can reload cheaper than that right?Do all you guys reload? Here where I live no one stocks big bore ammo, its all special order only.Do you guys have a hard time also finding off the shelf Rounds?Should I get at least 200 same brand cases to have on stock and maybe load all the samepowder lot when i find the load i want and seal in plastic cases?More? How many rounds a year do you shoot in your big boomers practing/plinking/hunting once its sighting in good? What would be a good number to fire to get familier with a new DGR rifle?100 at least?More?Iam open for suggestions...and guidiance
will the nickle brass last longer,be better, than regular yellow brass?Any favorite brand of dies?Should I try for my most accurate load at 50yards or start out at 25yards with the iron sights? Then move to 50 then 100?Or start at 50?What should I expect for a good group at these ranges?11/2in.?2in.?Bolt action rifle.Model 70 winchester Express.Do you guys also shoot cast lead bullets?
I guess I need a class in Big bore rifles, any teachers/old hands out there? Is been hard to get info at my local shops and the guys that work there dont know their self? I have been reading all I can and getting manuals and reloading equipment.Iam fixing to hit it wide open!!!!You guys all ready told me to shoot off hand and not on the bench, will shooting sitting on the ground or knelling on one knee be a wrong way to touch one off?Forget Prone!!!Shooting sticks will be the best for sighting in my express sights right?Do any you guys carry shooting sticks while hunting? Thanks for the help brothers!
Keep it under a hundred and between the ditchs!!

In OZ ,the 375 is most common and ammo is usualy easy to get ,next would be 458 ,then the various 416s. As this ammo is pretty expensive here ,the serious shooters usualy reload

I would say the prices in OZ seem to be about the same or maybe a bit more than the prices you listed. In different parts of Australia ,the availability would be different. Where I live ,it is stocked and in Darwin it would be stocked. But in areas where there is no big game you would have to order it in or reload from components. Since the big bore stuff is usualy very expensive or hard to get ,reloading is even more viable than with cheap easy to get 223s or 308s. As for the amount of big bore ammo we shoot in a year. WEll some people would go through only a few rounds if they are scared but then some of the people on the board ,my self included would go through 500-1000 shots or more. Of course most of this would only be at paper or playing in the bush. With my 458 Lott for example, I have been experimenting with various loads with bullets ranging from 250 to 550 gn (will try some 600s soon) and have been playing with cast bullets so I have fired probably 300 rounds in 3 months.
AS for never shooting from a bench ,well a lot of my shooting is from a bench ,but its only a 458 Lott. It is much more comfortable shooting off hand ,but the bench is good for sighting in and experimenting with loads. I dont like firing the 460 weatherby of a bench ,even off hand is a bit much for me. Some people on the board have things like 585 Nyatis ,I dont think they will spend much time at the benchrest.

Thanks for the tips cr500,If i had a lott and only shot 458wm in it would i still have to trim the cases? They would never stretch to the lott length would they?Would they crimp just the same with out trimming?Never heard one way or other...Sounds like your a good shot and know your rifle well..What kind is it?Have you added a scope or any weight?

AS for being a good shot , only at the type writer. I wish I was a good shot. You could fire a 458 win in a Lott chamber and it wouldnt stretch enough to hit the end of a Lott chamber which is 0.300 -0.0350" longer. The brass would work harden or just plain wear out long before that happened. AS the case stretched slightly ,you would have to move the bullet seating die (with crimp) out a bit ,but cases dont stretch all that much. If you are just starting out ,a 458 Win has plenty of power for grins and fun, plus brass and guns are common. If you wanted a 458 Lott ,it would be better to just get the proper length cases .
My Lott has a 2.5X leupold and has had some lead shot added to the foreend to increase weight and balance a bit further forward.
