Need Help with M88 Sporter ID
      #238533 - 02/12/13 08:45 AM

I bought this rifle from a guy who said it was a "Guild Gun". I personally don't think it was built in Europe, it has a Winchester Mod. 70 steel buttplate and has been rebarreled to .257 Roberts, I might be wrong though. Regardless the build quality is impeccable. No other stampings anywhere besides the "KAR88" and below the barrel line "257 Rbts" , Interesting enough it was left to still feed from the enbloc. Your thoughts?

IMO those only parts made in europe are action and rear sight. Nice rifle thou. The stock makes me to think this rifle has been made between wars.

That is a nice rifle. I think it has a Stoeger stock - at least it has Stoeger styling - and is made in the USA.

also did not think this sporter was build in germany
there is another M88 in 7x57 Mauser just now on gunbords having some similarity's with your rifle. the new owner have bought this rifle on gunbroker lately. I think the shape of the stock is very much like on your rifle.

no doubt this was build by using a C.G.Haenel 7mm M 88 carbine for south america.

Love that cocking piece peep sight, I've been looking for one for mine but all I can find is the M98 ones.

when we compare the gunstocks of this two rifles they are so similar we can probably say it was made by the same gunmaker. when? the 257 roberts was not available as a factory round before 1934.
the rifles were made in the united states between 1934 and 1960.

I am in love with the rifle, actually took a nice buck with it this year. I'm in it all of $200, what would you value this rifle for?

I would see the rifle in the 500$ range but imho its worth more that the market will pay for it. fortunately there are not so many vintage bolt action collectors around except for original mauser and older mannlicher schönauer so we get this stuff for less its realy worth
do you have made pics of the buck with the rifle in the field?

Sure, and interestingly enough with a German gun, I'll be if the deer didn't look like a German deer (Roe) lol. One shot, 100 grain roundnose 75 yards, iron sights of course, Kentucky.

waidmannsheil
yes, looks very much like a roe buck but if you compare the size with the rifle it must be a roe on steroids
what is it ? a whitetail?
shooting it with iron sights is a good start and must give you a lot of confidense into this rifle.

Yes, whitetail. The rifle feeds RN bullets like silk but spritzers hang on the feed ramp. I was wondering if I could modify the angle to help facilitate feeding of the spritzers.
I have a bad addiction for old sporting rifles and shotguns.
The last 6 years I have taken a 100+ year old Swedish mauser hunting. It has a 16.5" barrel , side mount for scope and is in a Fajen stock. With NORMA ammo it is deadly accurate. I just bought a Bishop Mannlicher stock for it , but it needs some love to get ready to hunt with.
We have a rather large elk population here and I have a K98 in a Flaigs stock for when I get drawn for that.
