Rum
      #23801 - 09/01/05 06:59 PM

I just picked up a bottle of Flor de Cana 12 year old and wow is it smooth; it flows easily. This rum is from Nicaragua and I tried it on a friend's recommendation. What else is worth trying?

My favorite rum is from Venezuela. It's called Ron Anejo Aniversario Reserva Exclusiva. It's a limited production rum, aged in oak casks, and comes in a leather pouch. Each bottle is individually numbered.

Inner Circle's website

http://www.innercirclerum.com/index.html

They have purchased the Beenleigh Distillery in Queensland, which previously was owned by Tarac Distilleries, which is only seven kms away from my home.

Mike,

Have you tried Ron Matusalem 15 yr old? Very nice. I tried Bacardi 8 yr old and was pleasanly surprised (maybe because it was made in the Carribean and not Canada). It has a bit of sweetness on the finish. Lastly, I recieved a bottle of Barbancourt 15 yr old for Christmas that comes from Haiti. It is aged in oak as well, and is nice, but not at the top of my list.

I forgot to mention that I tried the aged Appletons from Jamaica. It isn't that great.

I like Bacardi 151 thats been in the freezer with a single rock in it, but I have a desire to try St. Vincent's Sunset Extra Gold or whatever they are calling it. I've read great reviews of it. There is another overproof that I have been meaning to try, but I can't recall the name. It was a golden 169 rum.

Not for mixing with coke, but Strohs 160 proof butterscotch flavored goes great with hot tea on a cold night.

Mount Gay Rum. A cheaper consumer brand from Jamaica and light years ahead of the local Bundaburg Rum.

In Africa I am partial to a Captain Morgan's which I prefer to Bundaberg.

I have a bottle of the Inner Circle Traditional Pot Still Rum, overproof at 57.2% alcohol. Claims to be the winner of the "Jim Murray Trophy" Best Rum 2004, International Wine and Spirit Competition, London.

I cracked the seal and tried a sample. Very nice.

Am I the only sad git that saw a double entendre in this.

Agree with you about Bundy, nasty stuff but then again, too many Rum hangovers in my youth have made me very picky, & Rum aint my pick anymore. Worst stuff I could ever remember was Inner Circle OP, also from Queensland from memory. Probably explains the low brain cell count. I always tended toward Navy Rums when I drank the stuff & no, there is nothing to read into that either.

I hate to be unpatriotic but yes, Captain Morgan, esp. the OP, beats anything I've tried that we make now.

Bundy smells like Coopers' sheep dip and is the only argument I can think of for putting cola in rum; Inner Circle used to be excellent but the new iteration hints at sins of Bundy I don't recall in the old; Beenleigh is good but a bit pale for my liking.

Cheers

No, I once said on another forum when that photo was displayed was

You would have to be very careful asking for another 'Mount Gay Rum' if drunk!

I've always had a weakness for Pusser's British Navy Rum, bottled in the British Virgin Islands. It was the first rum I enjoyed drinking neat. I doubt that it's old enough to vote, however.

Can anyone explain the difference of "cane" rum from South Africa? I have a neighbor who's wife swears there's nothing like "cane rum" here in the US. After going through the Marine Corps' 7 Day store and looking at the ample selection of rums, I'd like to know from someone else what (if any) difference there is...

I keep hearing about "cane and coke", and I'm sincerely curious...

Though now sworn off rum I used to like the Beenleigh rum that was charcol filtered. The best way to drink rum was with water, not cola.
