Staged, that is just what it is.
The ejectors are look not activated, so the reloading is just for the sake of the photographer.

Since there are two cartridges in the fingers of the shooter, then one may wonder where they came from as there is only one missing in the cartridge pouch.

Why are the cartridges in his right hand and not in the left as the gun is broke open to the right side suggesting that he shoots from the right side. They would be in his left hand during shooting as they would otherwise be tangling with the triggers.

Why is the cartridge pouch located on his right side, and UPSIDE down? No experienced hunter would place it like that. I have used a “5 a side” leather cartridge pouch for the last 20 years, and placing it upside down would only make sure that the cartridges won’t be there after crawling, walking , running thru the bush. Shooting from the right side you can’t have anything obstructing the gun moving from the hip to the shoulder, so the logical placement would be on the front or slightly to the left, but never on the hipbone.

Agree.

Have never figured out why some of those ammo holders are upside down, to me it is as you say, a way to lose ammo.

Another case of the photographer knowing sfa.

Very astute summation Granhaven.

Maybe some hunters have their own way to do things.......?

Yes they do but it is still a staged photo.

I don't necessarily agree with everything Granhaven said,
like ammo on the RHS if a RHS if a RHS shooter.

Using "tenuous grip" to over come gravity on the ammo pouch,
that is a good one.

I believe there are several commercial carriers that present the cartridges upside down. I made one when I hunted with a double as I thought them a good idea. And in several years of use I never lost a cartridge. The ejectors/extractors look extended to me as best I can see. I'm sure the picture is a staged one but so what. I always carried my ammunition on my right side and I am right handed and never had a problem with it. If you could see from my avatar the 416 belt slide is on the right side right in front of the hip bone. Of course I have only shot 3 Elephants so I'm not an expert and really prefer a bolt gun and not a double so what do I know. Sorry I just saw I don't have an avatar on this forum. Don't know how to display one.

How does the ammo not fall out if upside down ?

Either way, doesn't worry me as I have so many
ammo carriers I won't be getting any more.

Like you, I often have one on the RHS in the same location
although I tend to put the covered one on the RHS so if for
any reason the gun and ammo holder come together it doesn't
scratch the stock.

Whatever works for you I guess, once you have a system
you work to, best to stick with it of it works.

I was wondering what people would say about a cartridge pouch being carried upside down. I too think it would be quite likely the cartridges would fall out when the pouch is opened. Some of my pouches leather may be tight enough to hold them in, but it is not the way I would use an ammo pouch.

Good points about where did the two cartridges come from. But the buffalo looks well down anyway ... No one commenting on the mixing of ammo in the pouch? Perhaps it is meant to be a PH who often seem to have many types/brands of ammo in their belts, left over from clients.

Where I sourced the photo from, people were wondering about the "shotgun", and why rifle ammo was being used, and others having to educate them about double rifles and nitro express cartridges ...

Looks like he has a second pouch to the side which maybe where the second round came from and for me, the pouch in front and slightly to the right is preferred.

One pouch for softs, one for solids probably.

It is a Krieghoff; they don't have ejectors (they do now but that one is too old). He has a cartridge box that has enough tension to hold the rounds in; not hard to fathom. You do not un snap it until you are ready to re-load. And he is right handed so is holding the rifle in his left hand. I know, some do it the other way; hold the rifle by the grip in their shooting hand, but that is really awkward for some people. And it won't work at all if your DR is hard to open. Also, note that the rifle is not cocked. So, yes, it is staged.

Nickel cases for solids....brass cases for softs....instant visual identification

It looks like the pouch actually holds 6 cartridges?

I've seen youtube clips of people firing their double and reloading from an upside down cartridge pouch. It seemed quite fluid. I'd imagine the flap would only be opened when about to begin a stalk.
