new rifle what calibre
      #23768 - 09/01/05 09:33 AM

I own a brno 602 300winmag.Later this year i want to buy something bigger, probably another bolt gun.Is the 458winmag or the 375h&hmag the way to go,what are my other options. I would like to hunt buffalo with it sometime in the future.

Personally, I feel the 458 is too restrictive in its use. A 375 H&H is more versatile as an all around cartridge, but really is minimum I'd suggest for buffalo. Maybe you should look at either the 404 Jefferies, or either the 416 in either Remington, Rigby, or Taylor. I prefer the Rigby as Ruger supplies it in their bolt action configuration. Just a personal choice.

Is it a problem finding new brass for 404 and 416 in australia.

Brass for any of the English calibres is easy to get, especially 404 and 416 Rigby.

I would suggest going 375H&H - it will give you a larger bore size and can handle anything
on the planet you will hunt (if need be !!!).

It is more than capable in handling buffalo. It is also better to learn to shoot a slightly smaller
calibre well (if you can call 375H&H small) and get good shot placement than shoot a larger
calibre badly - and the 458H&H does kick alot more than 375H&H.

Brass, ammo etc etc are alot more readily available and factory ammo is alot cheaper.

Hope this helps.

BTW guys....what ever happened to the .400 H&H that Holland was coming out with.....Now there's a good sounding cartridge!!!

It would be a far better choice than that screwball cartridge that some drizzledick at Remington came up with.....too high pressure....a Rigby wannabe!!!

They have been released and H&H are making Rifles for them.

I agree it is a good cartridge but why not a 404 ????

Just MHO !!!

Really hard to go past the 375 H&H and especially if it is your first big bore.

wharf,

Before I got into the larger calibres, I went from a 222 to a 30-06 and I thought that
kicked like a mule !!! I then went to a 9.3 x 64 and that was worse. As I learnt
how to shoot the bigger bores and handle recoil better, now the 500 J, 505 Gibbs and
500 Nitro are no problems at all.

I concur with Mike, if it is your first bigger bore, that is definately another reason to go 375H&H
- if you don't like it, it's easier to offload as well.

Very few Brno's have been shot a lot - they may not look that good on the outside as they get
carried by Deer Hunters alot but generally the bores are great.

Anything under $1000 is OK. Try to get a Brno 602 as opposed to the current CZ550.

Also, Try to get the Brno Scope Rings that originaly cam e with the gun if you can.

Hope this helps

thanks for your advice fellas.Im not scared by recoil much although I havent used anything bigger than 375h&hmag.My size and weight help alot(130kgs).Would it be more cost effective to buy a 375 barrel for my 602.Why are the brno mounts the go.

wharf

I can't speak from experience on BRNOs but Model 70 Push Feeds that have that the magazine replaced with the 375 box, the 375 follow, the shortened bolt stop and the rails straightened at the rear won't reliably feed 375s. I suspect the problem is caused by the 375 H&H having a shoulder diameter that is only about the size of a 270 Win.

On the hand I had a Rem 700 in 416 Remington which would feed 375s perfectly, 300 Wins perfectly and also 270 Winchesters perfectly. Of course for the 270s we had to point the gun in the air so the cartridge could fall back out.

If you rebarrel and wants sights fitted then you might find rebarreling is not cost effective plus being a pain in the arse.

Mike

Wharf, I think the Brno Super 375 was probably an U/O double and that price is high - saw one at the sydney gun show last Nov at $2250 but it had horrible "Tyrolean" stock carving. The Brno Super 375 I have shoots really well and is a cheap way into a medium bore double.

Wharf

I would go for a .375 H&H as my next rifle is I was you.

Easy to get ammo at a good price and the most common 'big bore' in Oz.

Most guys with larger calibres have one of these before 'moving up'.

The super brno was a u/o and I found out a mate picked up one for $3500 with only a few rounds through it.But he said its very hard to get barrels for them.375h&hmag is the best option for now I think.

Stupid question: for a double: .375 H&H oder .375 H&H Flanged? What about availability of brass for the latter?

.375 H&H is a great rifle and one that can be used for a wide array of game--from deer up to elephant.

I have one in my battery and love it. But my PERSONAL suggestion would be a .416 Rigby.
