Should I buy this??
      #237571 - 08/11/13 05:28 PM

I thought I would share this with you all.

This rifle was built by Ron Webb of Queensland, Australia and was engraved by his son Scott as a Hunting rifle for Scott himself.
Some of you Queenslanders may be familiar with it.

Sadley both are now deceased.

I do not normally buy other peoples projects, but just maybe this ought to be the exception.

The action is a genuine Commercial Mauser with all matching numbers, and arguably better for the work you see before you.
The barrel is an octagon profile with full length integral rib, and is like new.

The Wood is not exhibition grade, but none the less has nice colour and figure. It has only minor bumps and bruises.

In my considered opinion it should have been built as a 9.3x62, not the the 338WM we see. However that was Scots calibre of choice.
The engraving is very nicely executed ( I believe Scott trained in Italy), however the Tiger may be considered a little naive, almost in the" Jeffery" style, but now Im really searching for faults here.

This is an excellent piece of gunmaking by a genuine Aussie, and stands head and shoulders above the normal range of " custom" rifles put together ( assembled) by most gun mechanics.

Priced at AUD4500, this represents a lot of rifle for the money, and its not hard to fiqure what its replacement cost would be today.

All opinions welcome.

Best
Eric

It would cost a lot more than 4.5K to make that today in Oz.

Does it 'set your hair back' and make you think of Queen and Country ?

Paradox,
everyone has his likes & dislikes, if you like this piece then outlay the cash.
You could certain do a lot worse than this fantastic piece of kit!
Bit too flash to cart around the paddock hunting for me, but it did get made from one of the best here in Oz!
Well worth 4.5K to me in engraving alone - but that's just my 2 cents worth
Cheers

G'Day Fella's,

Paradox, I learnt a long time ago, that the worse thing you can say to yourself is; Gee I Wish!

So, if All the Bills are paid, there is Food in the pantry, Cloths and Shoes on all the Family members Back and Feet and obviously, you really want this rifle and enough Money is available to pay for it, BUY IT!!!

The alternative is, you will be kicking yourself, for the rest of your life!!!

By the way, the rifles stock is a Very Nice stick of wood!

Hope that helps and thank you for sharing it with us!!!

Doh!

I would buy it even if I only intended to re-sell it later for a profit.

To me, this is a work of art, rather than a practical hunting rifle. A .338 Winchester Magnum without a scope is an oxymoron. There is no way to take advantage of the benefits of a flat shooting, hard hitting cartridge like that with the primitive open sights on this rifle. There is also no way of mounting a scope on it without obscuring a great deal of the exquisite engraving. Ideally such a rifle would have been fitted with a Griffin & Howe side mount and then engraved. Only a small portion of the receiver would have been covered up.

If you would cherish it as a work of art, by all means buy it. However, I wouldn't expect any practical use out of it in its present form.

Thank you xausa

All very good points, except Im not sure I agree with " the hard hitting, flat shooting, no scope, oxymoron " reference.

This theory would reduce a great many of the worlds finest bolt rifles to the level of "oxymoron".

Makers such Rigby, H&H, Mauser, Griffin & Howe, to name but a few all chambered for cartridges such as the 240Apex, 350 Rigby Magnum, 350 Griffin &Howe, 280 Ross to name but a few, most built with no scope,or with one that by todays standards at least did not allow the shooter to maximise the cartridges capabilities.

These rifles are keenly sought after and many are still in active service today.

With reference to the flat shooting 338, Im of the old school and would prefer to use the heavier bullets which makes the cartridge much, much less of a " flat shooter", and therefore "practical" at normal big game ranges.

Certainly if you use the 200 gr bullets it can be easliy compared to the huge range of 300 magnums.

I, like many Hunters am not opposed to the additional challenge of using open sights, as opposed to shooting game at 300 yards, off a rest, with the scope cranked up to 24 power.

Agreed, the sights would not have been my choice, but not sure about them being primitive. My experience is some of the best sights are the simplest.
I am afraid I could not bring myself to put anything so ugly as a G&H side mount on any rifle .

Thank you very much for your comments , they are useful and provide good food for thought.

Best
Eric

My very sincere apologies to Ron Webb. I have just been informed by an old friend that in fact Ron is alive and well!
Sadley, not making guns anymore.

Thank you.

A great amount of game can be hunted in this country without a scope. In fact I would say all of it. All of the deer, all of the pigs, all of the buffalo.

Yes, sometimes you might not be able to take a shot
but more often than not you will.

If not, I must have been dreaming the last 10 years or so of hunting in this country because one hell of a lot of my rifles don't have scopes on them.

I was going to query you re the Ron Webb bit but decided not to !!!

Eric

I decided not too as it has been a couple of years since I had heard about him making rifles and as such, didn't know
if he was still with us but glad to know he is.
