Slow Start with the new .577
      #237379 - 01/11/13 04:52 PM

After some indifferent results shooting meat-buffalo for the local community, I ordered in some 650gr Nitro Woodleighs to load in place of the BP Weldcores I had been using successfully with the previous rifle. Those softer bullets appear to have been over-expanding at the higher velocity, perhaps 'parachuting' on impact.

Walked a couple of creeklines yesterday afternoon looking for a worthy bull, but some fools on quad-bikes had torched the place on the previous weekend, and the buffalo had headed for greener pastures.

Did find a couple of hogs though. First one was in a sand wallow, looked like a boar but was just a big sow.

This is what a head shot with the .577 looks like!

Second one took off from an adjacent hidden wallow at the shot, but didn't offer a good sight picture till over 90m away. Luckily the big Webley was up to the task!

Third one was a better boar stalked in his wallow, never knew what hit him! Broken tusks unfortunately.

Boy, was it hot out there! Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Back for another look in a day or two, hopefully to find some country with a bit of grass left standing!

Great stuff Tony - pity about not having the opportunity to slug one of the nitro pills through a Buff but it looks like they work pretty well on pigs!!

I'm out with the 470 on Chital this weekend - hoping the weather plays the game!

Mark:
We've been getting regular heavy storms in Darwin but they appear to be restricted to the very top corner of the Territory.
Went for a walk on Sunday arvo just an hour or so out of town by road, dry as a bone.
Not a drop of rain had fallen there since the last 'wet', and unfortunately we saw nothing worthy of warming a barrel.

Also, the floodplain north of Harrison Dam, a favourite goose-hunting haunt, was still bone dry when I was last there a week ago.
The dam itself had almost dried up! Very patchy at this time of year.

Unfortunately the heat and humidity is ubiquitous however!

Good pictures - thanks for sharing them with us. Looks a wee bit dry.

Very cool rifle. Similar to my Lyon & Lyon .500 BPE.

Bonanza:
The hammerless boxlock BPE doubles certainly have a presence! You are lucky: the usual signs of serious use in India appear to be absent from your fine example!

Nice restock (I presume?) sure beats termite damage and borer-holes!
