I don't like the calibre anyway.
And that wood is not that flash, very nice yes but I have seen far better on English bolt guns.

That caliber must have been a specialty for Lancaster. I had one in my shop years ago with a beautiful Oberndorf double square bridge action. I can assure you it went for considerably less than that asking price.

If the provenance is as stated (King George V) it might just warrant moving the decimal point one place to the right. I wonder how it got out of the royal family and when. Possibly to a hunting companion and then on to someone else when he passed?

I thought the ref to the Royal family was to the maker having made guns for them, not this one in particular.
But that is my HO.

Could be, but I think the reference may be to the man himself. He was HM King George V, HRH Prince of Wales (at birth) and HRH Duke of York - so held all the three titles listed in the description.

I wonder what kind of indoor range would have a backstop strong enough to stand up to a .280 Ross. All the indoor ranges I am familiar with are good only for rimfire rifles and pistols.

Quote: The current owner has owned it for over 50 years during which time only a few dozen rounds have been fired at an indoor range..... ,But he did spend 12 hours a day, every day, fondling it so as to wear off all the finish!

Note that the ad does not say: "made for HM King George V, etc." It merely states "as supplied to.." IMHO this is no provenance at all! I can say as well that I own "an old model Gibbs Mannlicher as used by W.D.M.Bell" or "a Mannlicher Schoenauer as used by Hermann Goering.."

That 'indoor" range had a shit load of branches in it for all of those scratches..it has the scars of a behind the seat truck rifle!

I checked with them, ex ordinance action, asking price is correct, it might be a $2000 rifle on a very very good day. I think the owner will own it for a very , very long time to come!!

"Charles Lancaster Circa 1920 280 Ross-Eley, as supplied to HM King George V, HRH Prince Of Wales, HRH Duke of York."
Sorry for the English lesson but my reading of this is that the rifle was made for or at least supplied to HM King George V. This is either true or the seller has a poor grasp of English or intends the implication to be taken as true.
Kuduae's sentence in his post also means the same as the above.
In both posts the first part of the sentence describes a specific item, then "as supplied to or as used by .......
This is direct implication.
Nevertheless a nice rifle but in a rather poor cartridge and $28,000, he's got to be kidding.

Trying to justify the price with some reflected glory on a rifle that's never seen a royal estate.
The 280 Ross was the original cartridge for which the Ross straight pull rifle was built.
I believe it is in the 7x57 / 7x64 range, probably in the middle.
A nice pig gun, for sure. Proper price would be around 5% of what's being asked. I do hope its a consignment item......
