Montana opener for Antelope with my little Woman..
      #236740 - 16/10/13 07:43 AM

Was quite an opening weekend of hunting.after getting our wall tent sent up we started hunting...antelope were scare (blue tongue and winter kill) and incredibly spooky..we hiked for 2 days off and on trying different plans of attack..but at the last minute something always seemed to go awry ..we spotted these two guys from over a mile away..watched were they were headed and took off hiking trying to intercept them..

To make a long story short..they were in a hay field completely in the open..we were up on a ledge to the field..but no way to get closer..Addie shot her buck at a lasered 502 yards with the 22-250..incredible shot...

After displaying that kind of shooting ability I have decided next year I am going alone...

THE END..

Very nice Ripp, good to see you 2 got out together. Big fan of hunting with my wife as well.

What unit where you in, had a friend and his wife hunt over by Zortman (don't know what unit) and saw nothing in 2 days, not so much as a deer.

We had a 700 tag--most of southeast Montana is in that tag number..yes, blue tongue has really put the hurt on the antelope and whitetail...heard in some areas there are groups of 35-50 in a general area of 1/4 mile..dead...

So that, and so far what looks like it has all the makings of a heavy snow winter, along with a larger than normal supply of predators...along with the fact of the largest forest fire in Montana's history (365,000 acres) last year...life does not look well for the immediate future of game in that area.

How do you make a 500 yard shot with a 22-250? I would not begin to know how.

As to 500yds, typically it looks like this.

Doesn't sound encouraging.

Not trying to be sarcastic--so please do not take it that way..but have you never gone shooting prairie dogs in the west anywhere??? it is NOT uncommon to shot p-dogs at 4-500 yards and beyond...one of the primary calibers used is 22-250 or 220 Swift...an antelope is many times larger than a p-dog...it is really not as difficult as you may think...wind plays a big role..but on that day..it was very still..which is very uncommon for that area of the state..

n the last 3 years she has shot antelope at 265, 346, 358 and now over 500...she shoots with me, practices and is a very good shooter.

Up to around 600 yards you also don't have to compensate for earth movement..the coriolis effect...however in that 800-1000 yard range it does come into play..along with many other factors..but as I read in an article from Field and Stream--in making the 1000 yard shot..with the aid of todays technology, etc...its no longer what it once was..

then there is the debate of is it ethical or not..that is a decision everyone has to make..and be honest of your skills..and what distances you practice...along with the type of hunt you want..

All of the above is IMHO---

Take care

I have been on several praire dogs shoots from 1980-1988 with a 220 swift and a 22-250. Back then you had shots from 50-200 yards all day long. The longest confirmed kill was about 280 yards with a 18X scope. Shots beyond 200 yards required a spotter as the first shot was usually a miss.

However, 500 yards is really really long. You must have a awesome scope to see that far. The benchrest guys are using $2000 night force 24X for thier F-Class rigs at my range.

Blaine - I use a 6-24X M4200 scope on my .17Ackley Hornet for shots to a maximum of 520 yards. My bottom mil dot gives me 520 yard zero when the scope is set at 22X. A laser range finder gives me the range, I pick which mil dot to use from the chart on the side of the scope bell and take the shot. Nothing difficult. My .375's scope has stadia wires giving zeros to 400yards for the 270 gr. TSX. Modern day cheats like laser range finders make long range hitting much easier.

My .222 Sako has an 8-32X M4200 on it, but it's only a 350yard rifle due to it's trajectory and duplex (only) reticle. Mil Dots and a laser range finder take the guessing out of the equation.

Seeing your impacts on a rat field helps teach holdover and wind drift as well. I didn't see the impacts with my .220 Swift due to it's recoil however I see every one of them with the "little-case" .17's. (same drift and drop as a Swift shooting a 50gr. lead tipped spitzer or 52gr. match bullet at 3,950fps)

Same hold true for me with my bull barrel in .223--can see the shot which is very helpful..as to the swift..I have a Cooper in that caliber with a VX-3 6.5-20..shooting 50 gr ballistic tips at over 3900 fps..shots out to 400 are not an issue with that gun..over 400..figure out the holdover with the crosshair to 500 and you are good to go..

I do have a Nightforce on my 338 Lapua..but in that case I am headed for the 1000 yd game and beyond..

Great to see that antelope, never seen it before. Great pics, looks like both of you enjoyed it.
