Merkel barrel adjustment system
      #236243 - 30/09/13 06:53 AM

Hi All,
I am interested in finding out how the Merkel double rifles are adjusted and what makes the system work. I know that one barrel is fixed at the muzzle end to a barrel bracket and that the other barrel floats. They have two small holes in the front bracket that have allen head adjustment screws in them. I can eaily figure out the convergence or spreading action of a wedge fitted to one of those screws, but I can't figure out how they adjust the elevation. Both barrels would have to be solidly soldered together back at a mid spacer so there couldn't be too much movement involved to get it regulated. If anyone owns one of these guns in the 140/160 model, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks,Bob H.

I had a 140A the lightweight version in .30-06. I had a devil of a time "trying" to regulate it. It was odd. The barrels shot apart and at a diagonal. Adjusting one or both of the hex screws would simply reverse the diagonal pattern, ie, left barrel at 11 o'clock and right barrel at 4 o'clock would switch to left barrel at 7 o'clock and righ barrel at 2 o'clock. I could get them to regulate on the horizontal plane but a foot apart at 50 yards. I loved that little gun but the frustration of not getting the regulation to cooperate saw me trade the little devil in. I also tried different powders, bullets, loads, seating depths, and a bunch of other tricks, short of swatting it with a large ball peen hammer. I'm now on my 5th double and that little Merkel was the only devil in the bunch. I still presently own a Merkel in 9.3x74 hard soldered barels that regulates with a good composite pattern out to 200 yards. It took some work developing the load but I got it right. My Blaser S2 in .470 regulated well, but I did actually lightly swat the bronze? yoke that holds the muzzles together tho make it regulate on the horizontal plane. The barrel wedge worked very well to draw the left and right patterns together at 100 yards VERY nicely. I found the stock and trigger guard configuration on that gun to be really hard on my finger behind the trigger guard, so that one was replaced with a Merkel in .470 that had a great composite group with the hard soldered barrels. I sold that gun and moved to a Heym in .500NE. Long story, but simply to illustrate that the regulators in the modern double workshops really know their craft. The user adjustable guns in my experience don't seem to behave as nicely as the advertising would lead one to believe. As far as your original question as to "how" the Merkel mechanism actually works, I can't honestly say given I did not take it apart. Please accept my apologies for hijacking the thread a little.

One last thought: the factory target supplied with the Merkel lightweight was also a diagonal pattern. That struck me as odd when I bought the gun that the factory hadnt achieved a good regulation, but the gun was a special order that took over a year to deliver to me so I didn't pay much attention when I picked it up - I thought that it could be "adjusted"' just like the advertising said it could.

Postman,
Thanks for your response, I have often wondered how and if these so called adjustable guns would regulate. The theory is that you should be able to adjust them for different loads and bullet weights, but it doesn't sound to me like Merkel has cracked the code yet. I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm sure somewhere out there that there is a gun that can be adaquitely adjusted at the bench, I have just not found it yet. I am still interested in hearing from Merkel owners who might have a gun that works as advertised and I am still trying to find out how the adjustments are supposed to work. Bob

Hi Postman
I too am having trouble regulating my 7x57R double . Its a 141 with the hex screw adjustment .
I thought I would be clever and save a thousand dollars by having my own smith install claw mounts rather than the factory but now I cant get a good group .But Im pretty sure its not the scope or mounts .
My problems are pretty similar to yours .Not so much diagonal change but separation seems unpredictable. My next strategy is to allow more time for the barrels to cool : 15 minutes rather than 5-7 minutes . I think the first two shots from cold barrels should be the guide point .The barrels seem cold but I suspect there is still some expansion .The factory instructions seem to emphasize that regulation adjustment should be from a cold barrel with a quick second shot .
Did you try different factory ammo ?
Like you I can get to about 6 to 8 inches on a lateral plane but that's at a hundred yards .
Im in for a pretty quid with this rifle as I had it restocked .
Any suggestions would be appreciated .

My 141 was ordered with the factory turn in mounts. I got the Recknagel mounts/rings so most of my shooting was done with a scope mounted. I didn't use factory ammo at all as far as I can recall. I sold the gun, but still have those mounts. They were VERY hard to get in Canada, cost an outrageous amount of money and I'm saving them for a potential future gun to use them on one day.
