Return to Camp Camel
      #235932 - 22/09/13 04:34 PM

Well our five day hunt in western Queensland for camels did not start well. Day one and two were spent in Mt Isa waiting for a new Radiator to be fitted to my 'Deo after overheating issued indicated that it would not be prudent to continue. A big shout out, to the boys at Miners Mate Automotive who got us back in the fight. We only found out at the end, that the owner used to shoot 'for the box' down in the channel country. No wonder we got prompt attention (or maybe it was the mention of a cash job that got us in fast ?).

Last refuel at Boulia.

Then back to Camp Camel where I had spent last August with Boggy, Bumnut, John Foxwell, Blacks and Rule303. This was my fourth trip to the property and the 2nd time we stayed at the relatively luxurious 'Camp Camel'.

Nothing beats a Gidgy wood fire at night.

We hit the tracks hard for the remaining two and a half days seeing 54 camels and shooting 26. We had to spend up to 14 hours per day in the truck and covered 600km in total to get the camels we did. WE were up before dawn and back after dark. Yes, they were long days.

Rolling a Camel for a brief autopsy.

Time for a selfie.

Bull with the 9.3x62 first morning.

This is the 2nd shot with the 9.3x62. I had already shot him on the other side. You will see the 1st hole. Neither exited.

Constantly glassing

Our truck set up. Its a bit long to watch and the wind ruins the sound.

Another with the .243 and head shots.

Another Bull for me.

Brain shots were the norm for Cam and the .243W and 100 Sierra SptBt's. They bleed a lot from the head.

The Old Man with the .243 shot this through C3 for an instant 'down' on the last day.

Heading home, shooting all the way out for over 150kms +...

Last year the owner had sold off the 90+ breeding herd to meat shooters and I was worried that the population may have diminished. This is not so. The dynamics have changed however with small family groups of 5-6 now wondering around the property as well as lone batchelor bulls. These groups have no doubt moved in from outside to fill the population vacuum. We also covered a lot of new country.

I have now been part of 72 camels being killed here and they still prove to be very phlegmatic and hard to kill. You can put them down with one shot, but they often need mulitple shots and a coupe-de-grace for a final kill. Cameron and his head shots were very effective, particularly to the back of the head.

So why are the camels being killed in such large numbers? Is there an economic reason? Is the meat being processed? The hides being removed for further use? Protection of pasture or other foliage? Prevention of disease?

They are an introduced feral pest. Foreign to Australian. They compete with native fauna and domestic stock for natural resources and are very destructive of infrastructure.

Commercial operators herd them with helicopters and use the meat for wild dog baits in the area I shoot them. If they get too numerous on private land the owner can be fined for letting them get out of control, just as he can for having excessive feral pigs and goats.

Shooting them saves the pastoralist time and money and is more selective than poisoning.

Thank you for the reply.

I suspected it was something like that, but you mentioned meat hunting which made me wonder if there was a commercial meat market in Australia for camel meat. I was not aware that landowners might be fined for not removing feral invasive species. We would be better off on this side of the pond if that were the case here with regards to feral swine. They seem to have reached the tipping point in terms of increasing populations and geographic distribution.
Cheers

There are four commercial Abattoirs that process Camel Meat in Australia. Choice cuts go to South East Asia and the rest goes to pet mince. The feral dog baits is a local operation run by one of the local shire councils.

It is very rare for pastoralists to be fined however it can happen if they don't do somthing about an infestation.

The area I live in Australia, had a thriving market for wild boar meat. Shooters and doggers would bring prepared carcasses into a central 'chiller' for sale. This meat was then prepared and shipped mainly to europe for human consumption. I don't know how the rest of the country is going, however all the local chillers have closed to wild boar meat as it is cheaper to ship it from the US to Europe. At least that is the story being told to the chiller owners.

Any fossils this trip? I'm going up that way at the end of the year.
May have to ask around for hunting properties whilst there it seems!
Any pigs, feral cats, foxes etc around also?

How was the temperature, start of Spring and it's already toasty!

None Ash. Too busy shooting (not much hunting this trip).

Some pigs and cats. Nil Foxes. Haven't seen a fox though a family of dingoes is on the place. Temp was low 30 deg C.. Enough to bring out the bush flys and a bit too warm

Lots of weight in the trailer. Is it water or fuel or both?

Both John.

I need to add an additional 40 litres of petrol to the 180 in the jerrycans so we can last 4-5 days up there. Despite being quiet, the petrol V6 in 4x4 at slow speed sucks fuel.

Being very dry up there atm, I take my own water in case the tanks are empty.
