I subscribe to the DGJ. It is a treat to get it each quarter.

Mostly a shotgun publication it does deal with double rifles and single shot rifles. Beautiful pictures and some interesting articles.

Yes , I get it to drool over. AS Rusty says ,it deals with a lot of shot guns ,but also has articles on double rifles in each edition. They get a few of the premium quality guns in there. Usualy has more pages than most mags. I will continue to get it.

It's an excellent magazine if you enjoy the finest of shotguns with a few double rifles thrown in for good measure. I rifle that I bought last spring was featured in the DGJ a year ago (page one and two.)
It also is a great place to see the double guns offered in the advertisements of some of the best gun dealers in the business.

I received 3 issues yesterday, and have to admit that I drooled so much that I had to drink several large glasses of water to restore my bodies liquid balace!

The quality of the pictures and stories are really top notch.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Erik

spring,

...pardon me for asking, but how do you like your 455 470ne?...

...i have dealt quite a bit with todd and ed in the ny and dallas galleries, and understand that most 455s' are able to achieve sub-moa groups at 40 metres...

...in any case, you have a beautiful double...

Thank you, te. I absolutely love my gun. It shoots wonderfully with very good accuracy. I really like sidelocks and the Holland and Holland design. From everything that I can tell, this gun was built using H&H as its standard. I just didn't care to pay the new H&H prices or to take my inexperience into the antique gun market, so this gun fit my needs.
I, too, have enjoyed visiting the Beretta Gallery in NYC. I was last there about a month ago. This gun was originally sold by that store about 5 years ago. A gun dealer had mine when I bought it. As you've probably seen, they have a 455EELL in NY that is identical to mine except for the remarkable engraving the NY gun enjoys. I think they still want a hefty $90M for it, though this gun at Gunsamerica looks to be a better deal.
Yesterday morning I had some friends at my farm for a duck hunt. Afterwards we pulled out my .470 and everyone wanted to shoot it. Of course most people had never seen or shot such a gun. We all had fun and I think I may have created a few new double gun lovers!
Here's part of the description of my gun from the dealer where I bought it:

Beretta "Model 455"
Best self-opening sidelock double rifle in .470 N.E. Weight 11 1/4 lbs. Stock dimensions: 14 ¾"x 1 ¼"x 2 ¼"x 1/8" cast-off. Superb 26" chopper-lump "Bohler Steel" barrels with ¼ rib and 50yd. fixed/100yd. flip-up rear sight and ramp front sight. Bores absolutely 100% mint. Worlds finest reinforced, self-opening, Holland and Holland action with double underlugs, Holland hidden third fastener, bushed firing pins, ejectors, double triggers with articulated front trigger, non-automatic safety, and hand detachable side locks. Minimally engraved and gold inlaid case hardened action and locks are flawlessly finished and of superlative quality. Figured pistol-grip stock with rubber recoil pad and case hardened steel trap door compartment in the toe of the butt for two spare rounds of ammo. Splinter forend with lever release. I can't say enough about the overall quality and feel of this magnificent firearm except to say that it is the equal of any double rifle by any maker I have ever owned and it shoots just as good as it looks. If I were going after dangerous game on any continent this is a rifle I would not hesitate to take.

...thanks for the background, spring...

...i saw the engraved 455 that you are referring to at last year's sci convention...beautifully made and embellished, but somewhat unwieldy, imho, when compared to, say, a london best or even a 'working' continental double such as a krieghoff...also, i heard that once the gun is purchased from the galleries, its resale value, even if never shot, is at most one-half the original purchase cost, and that this is especially the case with the eell engraved models...of course this is no reflection on the gun itself, rather, merely the perceived 'collectors' market' value (similar to the argument used in the case of high end sports cars, i would suppose)...

...looks like you had a great duck hunt...beretta offers an extra set of smooth bores for their doubles, although i was disappointed when i went that route...

...again, good shooting/hunting...

te

I think you are right that the guns are overpriced at Beretta's full retail level. Buying the guns at half of that on the secondary market, which is what I think you were referring to, presents a much more attractive purchase. That's what I did with mine. The gun which I referenced on GunsAmerica is identical to the gun that you saw last year at SCI, was offered to me for about half the price that Beretta store in NYC (which is also a second hand gun) was asking for theirs. At under $50M, the Beretta 455 EELL could be a great addition to a collection, and certainly a gun that could not be replaced new at that price. Even at that discounted price, the 455 EELL is a much finer gun that I would want to carry into the briars of Africa. My more modest 455, however, will surely get to go....

I just found the first 5 volumes
in a used book store for $32.50
a year and $50. for the first
year. Sometimes the old or used
book stores have some treasures.
