Such cutting and welding can and has been done, even to the end that two actions resulted, a long and a short one. But the elongated action will not be identical to a true Magnum action from the Mauser, Oberndorf factory. As you cannot move the recoil lug and the screw hole under the receiver ring rearwards, you will also have to fabricate longer bottom metal too to match the new, longer screw hole spacing. BTW the rare made in France Brevex Magnum "Mauser" actions of the post-WW2 years were of such a design, new made but with a longer screw spacing. As no pre-shaped stock will fit such an action with non-standard screw spacing, hand stocking is the only option.

Must be why the Brevex action is preferred for building 505 Gibbs rifles.
From what I have heard, even the original magnum Mauser is a tight fit for a 505.

Here is a in the white .416 Rigby working rifle built on a BREVEX 400 Magnum action.
These fine actions were made in Suresnes, France by Polonsky from mid fifties to mid sixties.
They were offered in two versions, the 300 model for .375 H&H Magnum rimless type cartridges and the 400 for the .416 Rigby and .505 Gibbs rounds.
They were the only true magnum Mauser type actions available to the trade in the years following WWII.
They are extremely tough and reliable but need much work.

Thanks for all the information. I am fascinated by Mausers and all their variations, one of the greatest designs in firearms. Final question, when they built Mauser magnums at the plant why did they in many cases have the thumb cut in the left receiver wall? I don't know that many heavy caliber rifles that load with a stripper clip.

Two reasons for the thumb cut:
#1 Many user feel it is more comfortable to reload especially on a scoped rifle.
#2 Controlling hot gases in case of a ruptured shell was Mauser´s intention.

And last but not least a customer wants to have a cutout because most old british rifles had it.

Excepting a few experimental K actions, all commercial Mauser actions, short, intermediate, standard or magnum length, round or square bridge, had thumb cuts and clip slots until the 1930s.As justcurious writes, the thumb cut was protected by Mauser as a means to gas escape in case of a blown primer or ruptured case. This was not so rare a occurence in the 1890. The Mauser action blows gas that has entered the bolt into the left side of the receiver, from where it it can escape through the generous opening of the "thumb cut" without doing harm. Gas that continues to the rear past the "thumb cut" is then taken care of by the gas flange on the bolt sleeve.

The dovetail cut in the receiver ring of this World War I military action appears much too deep for safety. My guess is that it extends all the way into the upper locking lug recess. I have heard that such an action would not be accepted for proof today. If I remember correctly, it was this kind of action which P.O. Ackley utterly destroyed in one of his action strength tests.

I was talking abou this with my old now retired gunmaker, old scholl master from suhl and very pernickety.
he had a good opinion about this saying it was not seeing as a problem for decades. if there was not the problem today with some proof houses- not all- he would not boggle to do it.
and it depends on the rifle or not? a stalking rifle making 20 shots a year with common loads will not explode so quickly

Made in Zella-Mehlis and proofed by the proofhouse there in April 1913, gun number 877 of that month. Of the German proofhouses only Z-M stamped these ledger numbers. Chambered for the normalised version of the 8.15x46R.

Very interesting, but in my eyes it was nice once...
now destroyed by an unnecessary, too big and too modern scope, what a pity!

Let's wait for the result of the auction, I expect it will not bring more than the cost of the second-hand scope, the mount and the other renovations...maybe even less than that...no value of the rifle itself will be left.

This rifle is outside in very bad condition but despite that IMO very interesting rifle, it seems to have a real K (short) action. Seller says that caliber is 6,5x54 MS but I suppose It would be 6,5x54 Mauser...

I have a kurz that has a replacement bolt made by shortening a regular bolt. The replacement bolt functions OK but is not as good as I would like. If some kind soul in Germany would like to buy this rifle to swap bolts and maybe other parts it could be made a mutually "good deal". For example a I have a pattern stock with a stockmaker who can duplicate.

The Walther Gernot has a very interesting safety. Shotgun tang style. Very very nice.

Just to straighten up things: The name of the man is Gernot Walther, not the other way around. He is known for many years as one of the best stockmakers in Germany. He stocked most, if not all, rifles for Hartmann & Weiss, Hamburg.
