Will collect it tomorrow. After researching and writing two articles to be published by the German Gun Collectors Association www.germanguns.com on the Teschner & Co., Wilhelm Collath, Frankfurt on Oder, company and inventions, I decided I need a Collath slide and tilt action gun with a rifle barrel of my own. The frosting on the cake is the ultra-rare Collath designed scope mount, Collath's protected design DRGM # 176777 of 1902 with the original Goerz scope. Never seen the complete arrangement before.
Just to defeat the object of Nordmann's business: It will set me back EURO 652.-, about $ 850.-.

That is beautiful, Lancaster. I particularly like the matting/engraving combination. Classy look.

I have been rethinking Drillings lately, after handling a friend's Sauer. I'm now thinking they might be perfect for that walk in the woods where you just have no idea what you are going to encounter I had no idea they were so balanced. Well, his anyway.

wonderful Sauer Drilling in 16 AND 10,75x65R Gründig
the long Gründig cartride is the rimmed equivalent to the 10,75x68 Mauser
brass can probably made by cuting 3,25" sharps, my recommendation for anyone whos is looking for a serious Tropendrilling

No question that the original caliber was not .22 Hornet, since it was developed in the 1920's. The 5.6X35 Vierling was the equivalent of the earlier .22 WCF, introduced by Winchester as a black powder cartridge in 1885.

Lancaster,

If I'm not mistaken, in this case if I'm not seeing things, it appear the P. Oberhammer driiling has a double diopter. This is a first for me if it is indeed the case.

The crown/V mark on the top rib of the Oberhammer drilling may look similar to the London proofhouse "View" mark, but is the German "Vorratszeichen" = in stock mark. When the German prooflaw became effectiv on April 1, 1893, it was stamped on guns that were on maker's or dealer's shelves, ready for sale and not subject to the "new" proof. It was essentially a proof exemption mark. If after April 1, 1893 a gun without this crown/V mark was found on a dealer's rack, the dealer would be prosecuted and the gun subjected to full proof, using the heavier proof charges of the first or preliminary proof for rough barrels.

a nice Bockbüchsflinte in 16/65 and 8x57IR by J.J. REEB in Bonn

http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=4911668
Johann Jakob Reeb stirbt 1924.

Drilling by Christoph Funk in Suhl
http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=4936732
Hensoldt Diatal 4x32 on claw mount, 16/65 and 11,5mm( on the barrel 62/78)
in the gun licence as a 11,5x65R what will be a 450 BPE case cut down to 65 mm so its the 11,5x65R 450

What a monumental effort it must be to get anything like decent regulation and zeroing in a Drilling or Vierling.

I love that the cartridge trap is on the TOP of the stock on that hammergun.
Makes all the sense in the world.
That represents, to my mind, the classic drilling to a T.

Cape guns look best when a large rifle caliber to even the barrels out

12.17x44 would be a grand cartridge, too. A mellow fellow to accompany you on your journeys.

but unusual combination in a hammerless action
not born as one of the so called express blackpowder cartridges the 11,15x60R belonged into this group and will be found most times in older hammerguns. when hammerless action's came in common use this big bore blackpowder cartridge was outdated.

I take it that the pivoting nose of the right hammer serves as the barrel selector. Is this correct? In practice, how would this work? Would the shooter simply depress the nose of the hammer to select the rifle barrel? That would appear hard to do with gloves on.

The first gun, the GG LECHNER REMO 2 BARREL SET O/U 24 GAUGE & 20 OVER 8X58R has poor inletting and wood to metal fit. It has the poorest workmanship of inletting and wood to metal fit of any guns in this thread.

2 rifle barrels and one shotgun barrel - around here, that makes more sense than 2 pelters (pellet shooters) and a single rifle bl.

Nice - I do like the DR-Drilling.

That side by side in 11.15x60R would also be nice- IF the shotgun bls came with it - LOL.

What a useful gun for a guy hunting for meat, whether feathered or fur and hair.

Single shotgun barrel for smaller game and feathers.

.450 BPE for plains and medium game.

Perhaps both barrels for big cats at need.

Useful gun.

Would be fun to use today as well, with nitro for black loads, for the same sort of game.

And as previously said, some of us just love hammers. Also the best original way to carry loaded chambers safely.

Paul Reuss Hammer Drilling 16x16x10.75-65R
https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-f...un_id=101295560

"Three barrels, 16 ga side by side over 10.75x65r (444 Marlin), manufactured by master gunmaker Paul Reuss, Kronprinzenstr 3, Stuttgart, Germany with 27” Gussstahl (fluid steel) barrels, flat matted solid rib, fine bead front sight and tang-activated rear sight -- also the selector for rifle or shotgun mode. Chokes are M (.013) right, and F (.029) left.

Nicely figured English walnut stock, carved horn pistol grip cap, Euro beaded cheekpiece, fluted comb, vacant nickel-silver oval, and Deeley-release splinter forearm with small Schnabel tip, Checkering is classic point-pattern with combination of single and double borders. Buttplate is steel with widow’s peak.

Action is a back-action hammer drilling with old Purdey-style under lever, rebounding hammers, double triggers, percussion fences, active doll’s head third fastener and extended receiver tangs. Serial Number 13752 manufactured with modern steel for Nitro powder in 1898 (all three barrels carry German proof marks). Sling swivels on rifle barrel and rear of buttstock. Weight 6 lb. 10 oz……comes with original canvas and leather trimmed case with maker’s label.

Barrels and underlever are blue; receiver is casehardened with fine scroll engraving. Dimensions are 13 ¾” x 1 ½” x 2 3/8” with 1/8” cast off for the right hand shooter. The gun is all original and in exceptional all-around condition with great wood color built by the German master craftsman, Paul Reuss, a best gunmaker in Germany active from 1881 to 1901.

This old gun is a great example of best gun from yesteryear, yet with two or three lifetimes of use left, having survived in this pristine condition for its age. Just imagine taking this fellow out in the woods for quail, chucker, white tail or black bear; or better yet, wild boar, with its two 16 gauge barrels and the proven 444 Marlin rifle barrel underneath. It is a fun gun to shoot and one to instill pride of ownership.

About the cartridge: While it shoots 444 Marlin perfectly, according to Cartridges of the World by Frank C. Barnes, the full name of the original round is the 10.75x65r Collath and modern ammunition is not made for it. According to that book, that cartridge had a .424 bullet diameter. For the original cartridge loading, Bruce Mashburn of Chandler Texas as well as Champlin Firearms, Inc. in Enid Oklahoma are sources.

However, Dave and Dan Moore of William Larkin Moore, both told me that they had one of these old guns in this caliber and found they could shoot factory 444 Marlin ammunition in it with its .429” bullet diameter. They said for the Marlin cartridge the rim is thicker than the rim on the original Collath cartridge by a few thousandths, so there were some inconsistencies in extracting the fired cases. After measuring this bore, my gunsmith (Matthew Roberts of MNR Custom in Vermont, member of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild), and I were pleasantly surprised to find that it measures .430” so we found we had no problem with the Marlin cartridge on bore size. Matthew then took a few thousands off the extractor and found 444 Marlin factory cartridges work perfectly and with no extraction problems. Since Matthew’s test, I have fired a full box of Hornady 265 Grain FN bullets and the performance was as if those rounds were made for it. However, we did not alter the gun beyond the point of originality, the original 10.75x65r ammunition will still extract as well."

I wonder how many years it takes to make that gun considering the tree has to grow around the action parts.

Seriously, the fitting is awesome!

Strange barrel placement.

Why on Earth were the barrels positioned like that? One rifle on the bottom, one on the side, and the shotgun on the other side?

Instead of the more usual s by s rifles with shotgun underneath.

Indeed. Also, the magazine is on the top if the stock. Aren't they usually on the bottom?

yes, most are on the bottom but you see stock magazine on top from time to time

a common drilling have the rifle barrel on the bottom because the force working against the breech when fired is much greater

- when the the barrel is a rifle barrel
- when the rifle barrel is higher, that means further away from the locking mechanism

so they having the barrel firing first ( what means firing more often) on the bottom and the barrel fired the second time on top. its not that the action can not withstand it safely but any break action will come loose sooner or later and its only a question of how many rounds you fire with this gun. to make the action working as long as possible before you have to repair the locking mechanism you try to reduce the force against the breech as much as possible.

This Drilling cofiguration was invented and initially protected by W.Collath in 1896. It allows to fit a practical 2 rifle – 1 shot barrel assembly into a standard drilling action bar that usually does not have enough space to allow for a fat shot barrel with thick walls that connects the top rifle barrels to the underlumps. After Collath's design protection expired, this design was copied by other German and Austrian gunmakers. Usually the second rifle barrel is at the top left to be served by the rear trigger. The bottom barrel, served by the front trigger, usually is used first and more often. A "left – right" bang-bang is needed less often, if the first shot is well aimed. The most often used first rifle barrel is deep in the action bar, close to hinge ad lockup. This reduces stress on the action. Such a barrel assembly may be fitted into any production line drilling action, without need for an extra-wide action bar. This helps to streamlie production and keeps cost down. In GDR times only double rifle drillings of such a configuration were available from "Merkel" and other Suhl makers. Disadvantages: Reloading is a tad slower as you have to reload the lower, less accessible barrel more often. Regulation is sligtly more difficult too as the rifle barrels are at a slant angle instead of horizontal or up-down.

Thanks guys. Makes sense if it works to fit in an action size.

I am not sure what is meant by Magazine on top? For a break open gun? For the two German speakers I assume it is a translation issue.

This one is in the upcoming Dorotheum, Vienna auction:
https://www.dorotheum.com/de/l/6774777/

Bockbüchsflinte, Gebrüder Merkel - Suhl, mit Schrotwechsellauf Kal.: 12/70 und Lederkoffer, Kal.: 7 x 57R/12/70,

Very nice combination, pre WW2, I think, quite similar to the one I bought recently (and am still waiting to have it here in Switzerland....), but quite some more class in it:
note the better locking system with Kersten crossbolts plus underlugs
nice wood, probably bespoke fitting (the Krawatte or chinstrap hints to that)
loong barrels (68 cm / almost 27´´ for the Bockbüchsflinte
probably 75 cm / almost 30´´ for the extra shotgun barrels
on top of that the leather case....

I like these combos! But one is enough for me, so I´ll relax and just watch...

That starting price may be 50% of the estimated market price.
Still a low estimate...
I will check the final sales price.
Nevertheless, those older combination guns often sell for shabby money in the German egun website, same goes for drillings. Neither young hunters nor collectors want them.
I am quite sure they are higher valued in your countries!

Sure are some interesting combos here.

I just received this garden variety Merkel 90, scoped with a 3.5-10 Leupold VX3i in a swing mount. It's 12/12/7X65R and can manage 3 shots in 1" at 100 yards with the barrels cooled down well between shots. These models have my favorite safety and selector setup.

It's a bit heavy. All I need now for it is a restored Panzer with a machine gun turret to mount it on. My Kreighoff Trumpf Dural in 16/16/7X65R with a Zeiss 1.5-6 in their LW three-claw mounts weighs 2.5 pounds less, relegating the Merkel to truck-gun status.

Unusual one Lancaster - I thought the 5.6x65R was a insert for the 8x57 barrel, when looking at the photos the left barrel is slightly smaller, so 3 individual calibre barrels!
Amazing - I suppose there is a German term for such an wonderful piece!

to be clear, this is a Vierling having four barrels

its like a common Drilling, two 12ga barrels over 8x57IR and a little 5,6x35R Vierling barrel in the upper barrel rib or in the center between the big barrels

3000 and 4000 Euros respectively. More than I thought might be in Germany. Liked these old vintage guns, pretty examples of some old cartridge choices. One is a 24 guage, I imagine that is quite rarer to load for? The rifle cartridges as well sound older and harder to feed.

the 7x72R is one of the oldest Wilhelm Brenneke developments. in fact a 9,3x72R case necked down to 7 mm, looks like a real small bore nitro express cartridge http://old.municion.org/7mm/7x72R.htm

you can use 9,3x72R brass and modern 7 mm bullets for reloading.

the 24 ga is still available by FIOCCHI https://fiocchi.com/en/catalog/your-passion/hunting.html?animals=6362&gauge=6214

and its not expensive at all but cost similar to more common caliber. I know it because there is also a 24 ga hammergun in the safe. of course, I have 24 ga magtech brass in case it would dry up once.

Way over the top for my tastes, but you have to admire the workmanship, just superb!
The carvings & engravings alone would have taken hundreds of hours alone
Has some surprising details, a Damascus shot barrel & pop up peep sight, let alone a horn operating handle & grip as well.
I wonder when it was made Lancaster?

by the cartridge I would say between 1890 and 1900

iirc this was the timeframe when stiegele in münchen, bavarian court gunmaker, made the very first drillings.

I have to ask Lancaster!
Is the little lever arrangement under the antler grip the trigger for the rifle barrel, or just for setting the firing pin spring for it?

this is a manuel cocking action, thinking the little lever under the grip is for uncock the action

Apparently Friedrich Jung, Suhl, combined the Teschner/Collath breech action with the triggerplate lockwork of the Feist, Meffert “Hubertus Safety Gun". Here is a photo of my “Hubertus” double lockwork, uncocked and on “Safe”.

It works this way: The hammers are brought back to the full cock position by moving the opening lever under the foreend. To put the gun on “fire”, you press the grip lever up until it is caught by the catch behind. This puts tension on the mainspring. Now the gun works like any other hammerless. Opening the breech recocks the lock and you may continue shooting without further movements.
To put the gun on “safe” you release the catch behind the grip lever. The lever snaps down, relieving the tension of the main spring. This also activates a slide on the triggerplate, blocking the sear and rebounding the hammer off the firing pin. Now the gun may be carried fully loaded, but without tension of the mainspring and with all other lockparts blocked. The barrel selector switch of this drilling is a slide on the top strap like as on most conventional drillings.

The basic “Hubertus Safety Gun” was invented by the forester Franz Feist of Sommerschenburg and protected by the DRPatent No. 7142 in 1879. Feist assigned his patent to Immanuel Meffert, Suhl, who made the guns to Feist’s design. The photo shows the locks of a very early Meffert “Hubertus” gun, still very close to Feist’s original design, in the fully cocked and “fire” mode:

In 1893 Meffert improved the action. He designed the U-shaped mainspring shown above, protected the design change by DRGM Nr. 32200 and used the design at least until WW1.
By 1900 both protections were expired. So F. Jung was free to use the Feist – Meffert lockwork. The 8x72R cartridge was developed by Wilhelm Brenneke, Leipzig, in1898. That Jung drilling most likely dates to 1910 – 14 imho.

another interesting feature is the short rifle barrel. it was a little fashion for some time before the war to made drillings lighter.

My Thieme & Schlegelmilch has the rifle barrel shorter than the shotgun tubes. Best guess for it is around 1905.

I see this also in this time frame. it was a short lived fashion and I think most hunter don't realy like this and were willing to accept the weight of a common rifle barrel.

It's the only drilling I own in that configuration and I don't mind it, EXCEPT; I prefer to shoot cast bullets in all my rifles that will accurately shoot them. My T&S will shoot them accurately but, it also lead plates the bottom of the shotgun barrels. It took me an hour or so to get the lead off the bottom of the shotgun barrels first time I tried cast bullets. No big thing, I just shoot jacketed bullets in it.

A Sauer & Sohn, Suhl, hammer drilling Model XX. Made about 1890 according to serial number and lack of official German proofmarks. The “wild man” was a S&S trademark, while that eagle and the crowns were their private quality marks.
It is of common German hammer drilling design. The “Serpent” side lever is the action opening lever. The small top lever is the barrel selector. Pushing it over to the left moves a transfer bar in between the breast of the right hammer and the firing pin of the rifle barrel, barely visible in the 6th photo. At the same time that transfer bar blocks the hammer nose from hitting the right shot barrel firing pin.

If its not a restoration, then it has been a safe queen for a very long time then, the owner unable to find cartridge just let it sit, still lovingly looked after if it was.

From time to time these come up like this

As a transitional cartridge gun, especially one featuring the pinfire rifle barrel, the rapid evolution to central fire left some very clean examples like this sitting unused as the newer and easier to manage system swept the marketplace

Still there's the missing gear for this one
A case and tools would definitely complete the picture, even more so if there was a mould for the rifle barrel

As it sits, it's a time capsule
Getting one like this into service isn't terribly difficult for someone with determination, skills, and tooling

I'd run it

L2,899.99 is $4,490.28. No, I would say that price is not too much for this gun, not by a long shot.
The chambers and bores need a bit of work, but nothing out of range.

I looked at this & thought that there was something that just didn't look right here!
The shape of the hammers - they're flat, more like a striker really.
Unusual piece, part old, part new, interesting all the same.
Lovely piece to show Lancaster, thanks for that.

Schrader combination gun 16 ga+ 9,3x82R with a short rifle barrel
https://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=19380122
shotgun barrel 70 cm , rifle barrel only 51 cm

this was an idea before the great war that never realy catch on. they realise it was possible to made the rifle barrel shorter for safe weight with a similar velocity, anyway enough for hunting the common game but most people don't like it for several reasons.

As usual, lancaster bring home the bacon!

What an interesting gun!

And the first time I've seen a stubby rifle barrel mated w/ a longer shotgun tube.

I'm familiar w/ 9.3x72R & 9.3x57R/.360 but not the 82mm version. May I assume the "standard" 192 grain bullet is jogging along at around the same 2000 fps as the 72 version?

This would put the thing in the roe deer/fox/hare category*?

* Tho the gun savvy Nansen equipped himself and Johansen on their amazing "Farthest North" expedition w/ x57R/.360's and used them effectively on Polar Bear and walrus! His combination guns being 20 ga - 9.3x57R/.360...a genius choice really, allowing a large amount of ammo to be carried on their sleds. He lost his .577 over the side of a small boat early in the expedition!

Those ballistics sound familiar to me for the 72mm case, Rod. Not sure about the 9.3x57R version though.

the old 360BPE with a 57 mm long case was the original, first german modification was 9,3x72R to get more black powder into the cartridge. the 9,3x82R was another update to get 1 gramm BP more.
when smokless powder arive the longer case was obsolete, also the old 57 mm long case could be loaded higher with nitro than the 82 mm case with BP( in theory) but they got all more less nitro for black powder loads.
the 9,3x82R still survive because there were a lot of old combination gun still in use.

the short rifle barrel was a strange idea. see once a drilling with two common shotgun barrels and a rifle barrel underneath. the rifle barrel was just a little bit longer than the stock and you were able to shoot with the drilling hold your hand on the muzzle of the rifle barrel.
people don't thought such a ticking time bomb was worth to have maybe 1 pound less.

the space/weight of this little cartridges could be the main reason to select this calibers for a expedition. iirc, the eskimo on greenland shoot the polar bears with .222 rem at point blank range (10-15 meter)on the point because the bear shows no fear and clome close. you have to trust rifle and ammo for such a hunt, of course.

there were other versions 9,3x70R , 9,3x80R, the 9,3x72R had iirc, 6 different but very close versions alone before the cartridge was normalised. the old 9,3x57R 360, the german version of the british original, became than obscure because the 9,3x72R ruled. it is one of the cartridges with an own name "Försterpatrone" forester cartridge because it was the common rifle cartridge for the not so expensive drilling of the forester who had more a tool than a best gun.

Ah ha!!

Very good point & a concern worthy of consideration!!

FWIW: Here just north of me at a machinegun shoot a fellow shooting a MAC-9 (very short bbl) slipped his hand over the muzzle as he fired a burst and shot his fingers off.
