Water Buffalo shot series
      #233745 - 08/08/13 03:40 AM

A series of photos of Aaron Neilson taking his water buffalo bull in Arnhemland.

The bull was sleeping in the water, allowing Aaron to stalk up to the bull and as Aaron
readied for the shot, the bull starts to rise.

Aaron hunted with Matt Graham of Hunt Australia and was using Matt's Verney-Carron
double rifle in .450 Nitro Express.

***

Aaron has approached a sleeping water buffalo out on the wetlands. As he approaches the
buffalo begins to rise and Aaron takes the first shot.

The buffalo is hit well by the first shot in the shoulder, showing the impact dust cloud.

The buffalo begins to slump.

The buffalo crashes into the mud.

While hard hit, the buffalo is still not out.

Kicking in the mud. While the buffalo is hard hit by the 480 gr projectile out of the Verney-Carron
.450 Nitro Express it is still not dead. Water buffalo are tough and large animals and take some killing.

Aaron makes an insurance shot using the second barrel of the Verney-Carron double rifle.

A good advantage of a double rifle is the second shot is quickly available.

An insurance shot is a good idea, to ensure the beast is down for good.

Aaron posing with his fine water buffalo trophy. Hunted on the wetlands of Gan Gan on the
East Coast of Arnhemland with Hunt Australia. Rifle used is a Verney-Carron double rifle
in .450 Nitro Express. The .450 NE is an excellent choice for big buffalo bulls.

Congratulations to Aaron.

"Thought everyone might find this series of photos pretty cool! I was roughly 15 yards
from the old bull, using a Verney-Carron .450NE double rifle, pushing a 480 gr projectile,
at roughly 2,150 FPS. Two quick shots, and he never left his muddy wallow!

When guiding/hunting in Africa, I now carry a Verney-Carron .577NE double. In this instance,
I borrowed the guide's gun, for this close-up hunt!"

Why would it be dead? A 480 gr bullet at 2150 for 5000flb of energy at the muzzle......!
Slightly better than a 458 win And in the same category as any of the NE rifles that start with a 4.

Now that is a good distance for a shot.

A couple of easy shots yes but close enough to get the heart racing and close enough for things to get exciting quickly if all didnt go to plan.
good stuff

He did well to stalk up that close to the bull
with no cover.

They can be surprisingly fast from lying down
to fully up and galloping at full speed.

A great photo series and definitely the right way to hunt- up close and personal whilst using enough gun!!

Doubt if those white socks would have gone home with him!
Perhaps the joggers may still be in that shit horrible mud too as you would hardly lift your feet with them still on.
