.375 x 2 1/2 Magazine
      #232853 - 24/07/13 09:01 AM

I would like to know more about the magazine for the .375 and how it was designed to feed the straight walled case. If some one could describe it or,even better, post some pictures I would be very grateful.

Thanks

That is one sweet rifle. Would love to find one in 375 x 2 1/2.

I'm more than a bit pleased with it and I'm looking forward to trying it with some of the original 1950's Kynoch ammunition I bought in the last Holts sale.

I'll certainly do that and report back but sometime ago I acquired some original ammuniton and wrote it up as follows after shooting it in my 1902 Webley falling block,

"I was fortunate to pick up some Kynoch original ammunition in sealed boxes date coded 1938. In the interests of research I pulled one cartridge and it contained exactly 40 grains of stick cordite in a balloon head case. The bullet had a thin glazed card wad underneath it. The bullet weighs 270 grains and is stab crimped into the case very close to its base. Amazingly the bullet has the letter “K” embossed on its base. Heaven alone knows why they did that but it does look nice.

As I had 34 rounds of this I shot five rounds over my chronograph to see what they do. They averaged 1,958 fps and were very consistent. They are undoubtedly corrosively primed so I had to scrub the gun out well afterwards. A reproduction of an old ICI Sporting Ammunition Catalogue I have gives a muzzle velocity of 2,100 fps from a 25” barrel but I can only report the results I got."

A10ACN,

And I thought I was the only one with that fetish! An en bloc clip full of .256 Dutch Mannlichers has a similar effect on me!

Lancaster,

Egawds man, it does not get any better than that! A certain inbound John Dickson & Sons Dutch Mannlicher in .375 eagerly awaits. Did those Kynochs come loaded in the en block clips? I have seen examples of Kynoch boxes on which the box was stamped, "in clips". The examples I have seen have all been for Mausers. I'm curious if Kynoch offered ammunition pre-packaged in en blocs for Dutch Mannlichers as well.

in 1936 it was possible " these cartridges can be put up in clips of 5 if requiered"

but dont hope that Kynamco Kynoch will have the same service today. I never see this ammo on clips out of the box and btw if you are looking for a Mannlicher buy every dutch clip you can get.
its not so easy today to find them

Makes me feel all 'funny' inside...!

I think I've got a block of 8x57 Kynoch in clips somewhere...

Yeah, yeah, yeah.... OK so I was showing off a bit. That is an anthology of Banjo Paterson between Jock and Bell.

How did you find that Porch book on the Foreign Legion? I looked at that a while back, but picked up another book on Meinertzhagen instead.

I think Mr. Porch has a very rare talent. He managed to take a subject like the French Foreign Legion and make it totally tedious. A friend gave me the book with the proviso that he thought I was the only person he knew who might have the fortitude to actually read it. I did, but only just.

Which book on Meinertzhagen did you read? If you look on the bottom shelf on the picture I bought Capstick's book "Warrior" about him and was rather disappointed with it. I just didn't like the style.

On the other hand, everybody ought to read "Jock of the Bushveldt".

Thank you, sir...I wondered about that book, and now I know. I believe I will pass on it, and defer to your good judgement!

I read Capstick's "Warrior" first, and yes...not up to the standards of his first few books, by any means. Then again, I believe he didn't complete it before passing, and his writing went way downhill in later years.

I found Richard Meinertzhagen interesting enough as a person, though, that when I was in a good used bookstore, and found Brian Garfield's "The Meinertzhagen Mystery", I had to pick it up.

It was an interesting read. Mainly for the complete contrast with Capstick's hero worship. According to Mr. Garfield, old Richard was quite the scoundrel. How much I believe, I don't know. Perhaps it depends on the book you read first...

One thing about it, good man, bad man, or somewhere in the middle, Richard Meinertzhagen was a fascinating character.

Even,

I'll keep an eye out for the Meinertzhagen book. An interesting man indeed, from what I've read I'm not sure if he was a hero or a psychopath.

Of the books in the picture I would heartily recommend the Deneys Reitz Trilogy (originally published as three books: Commando [Boer War], Trekking On [WW I] and No Outspan [political life to WW II]) and A Rifleman Went to War by McBride. And once again, if you haven't read Jock of the Bushveldt, well I promise you won't be disappointed.

"The Meinertzhagen Mystery" is available from Amazon on Kindle.

Yes, yes, I prefer paper books too but after fifty odd years of being an avid reader who doesn't like to part with his books, storage becomes a bit of a problem. Just occasionally Mrs. Oldbrit insists on a weeding out and that hurts (but probably less than not weeding out, that leads to terminal earache).

I live quite close to Mottisfont Abbey in Olde Hampshire, where Meinertzhagen lived for many years. We went to a talk about him and some of his descendants were in the audience. The agreed position was that he was indeed a rascal.
