Anyone have luck with .500 BPE 3" with projectiles over 400 grains?

Not me. My Purdey demands 340 grains. It spreads with 360 grain bullets and won't come together.

R. Seyfried had one (IIRC), a Jeffery single shot, I think, with several sight leafs, as well as a folding ladder sight for even longer range shooting, graduated to 1,200yards I think it was.
It was designed (and twisted) for a 500gr. bullet, although marked .500 BPE.

I use the 450 grn Lyman mold (515141?)for mine and it groups fine. But I do need a taller front sight. This is for the 577/500 mags and #2 as well as the 500 3".

Only in "Nitro for Black" loads.
In Australia the usual projectile for any .500 N-for-B is the 440gr Woodleigh Weldcore designed for BP ballistics (Catalogue No. 8). They are more expensive than cast bullets of course, but offer marvellous performance in the hunting field.
The only .500 in my safe at the moment is a Rodda (Scott) sidelock .577/.500 No.2, and even that chambering shoots the 440gr Woodleighs together quite well with medium-burning nitro-cellulose (although initially high).
Someone will have to drag you chimney-sweeps, screaming, into the 21st Century!

My friend Leo who have posted a few times here has a .500ex which do a clean 1800 ft/sec with Woodleighs 440grain and similar with paper patch soft lead bullets.

The load for the 500 3" is the same one shown in Shooting the British Double Rifle. Mr. Wright has it dialed in!

Hi Bonanza
My .500 3" H&H BPE regulates very well with 440 grains bullets (Woodleigh and Lead PP). Loaded with 65 grains Rhino 11 ( same as Norma 201)

I have a James Woodward hammer double that shoots the Woodleighs 440grain very well. Just starting load development with cast in the same weight.
