Need Help ID'ing shotgun barn find
      #231536 - 24/06/13 04:49 AM

My father found this in an old pole shed. Obviously, it's seen some moisture. Oddly enough, it still seems to function.

I **think** is is a pinfire?

So I'm wondering:

1. Anyone able to ID it? I can take better pictures of whatever, just need to know what to take them of.

2. What should be done with it? Leave it as is, hang it above the fireplace? Patina is good? Or soak it oil, and see how it cleans up? I have no intention of using it.

Def Pinfire.

European make ? (trigger guard, lever forend).

I'd do a search on the net because I have seen very
similar guns in photos.

Here is one.

Trigger guard almost identical.

Lever nearly identical.

The action or end of the barrels slightly different
but that could be a date / style thing or just who
made it.

There is a (makers mark?) symbol above the serial Number, it's a sort of crown maybe? And LS underneath it.

Can just see it but you'll need to put up a really close
photo of it for me to read it.

What about proof marks ?

I wouldn't bother trying to find out who made it
unless it was a really high end gun.

As you said, I'd stick it above the fireplace
after cleaning it up which I think it might do
quite well.

One barrel says (you can see once opened) 17.0

The other barrel has two letters in a circle, with a star underneath, can't quite make it out.

Photo's coming up.

A cheap Belgian pinfire gun, mass produced by a cottage industry in and around Liege. The 1911 ALFA catalog still listed them for US $ 38.- fob Hamburg. For comparision: An early commercial B Mauser in 8x57 was $ 200,-, a .30-30 Winchester 94 carbine $ 108.-. The stamps you describe are Belgian proofmarks.

Again, awesome, thanks guys. Just wanted to know what it was, didn't think it was of any value whatsoever.

For interest sake, here are the marks:

Also, here are the other's that were found. Mostly seized up. I'll take them to the local gunsmith for disposal, if he can use even one part off any of them, a front sight, sling mount, whatever, they will have more use than to me.

Sad someone would let them rot like this.

This one is some kind of single shot?

Thanks for all the replies, good wall art if nothing else.

Dip that door in a hot caustic bath to strip the paint and put it up for sale in Carlton Vic and you will get 5-600 bucks for it.

Quite recently, I was advised (& quite sarcastically as well) that a 3 band Snider with Canadian markings, good stock shape, no cracks or bad dings, good original finish and a V-good to Excellent bore, is worth 'around' $600.00 - in Ontario, Canada- check (www. gunnutz. com).

Here in the West, ie: BC, they'll bring more - to $1,000.00 if in good shape. Even a 3 band Enfield Parker Hale rifled musket will command close to a grand.
The Snider in the pictures is in poor shape and the bore will be rotten.

I just looked one over a week ago, at a local shop for a fellow. The bore was poor, but good elsewhere. I advised no more than $250.00 to $300.00 and he'd have to re-barrel it to shoot it. This rifle's action was good, as-was the stock.

Prices & values vary around the country, let lone from one country to another.

Of the two bolt action single shots,,the top one looks like one of the 'GECO' labeled 22 rifles. Though usually sold as various Models as 1919, 1922, '27. ect by some dealers now,,I don't know if those are actualy the original designations or not. Seems I saw an orig ad reprduced in a publication for these as a '1919' though.

The little rifles in the same configurations are seen w/ J.G Anschutz markings on them as well as other makers.
GECO wasn't a mfg'r anyway AFAIK, just a retailer.

They usually sell for around $150 in the NE USA,,if they're in very nice condition.
There are some DST equipted, checkered stocks, better sights, ect. They get more money.
.22RF, .22RF SmoothBore, 6mmRF are all common calibers.

The bottom may be a Bayard or other inexpensive Belgian s/shot rifle from the same time as the shotguns. Usually a .22rf as well

Light scattered surface rust. Will clean to 'Excellent'..
