A McNab is a three in one day kind of thing. It is very popular here in SAf.You have to shoot and catch a game animal, shoot a game bird and catch a freshwater game fish.

Haven't heard it called a "McNab" before.

Have heard of this sort of thing in New Zealand where there was a competition to hunt a deer, catch a trout and .... can't remember the third thing, but I suppose it was shoot pheasant or duck or something like that.

B5,

have you participated in this sort of competition?

The McNab is quite popular in RSA, at least in KwaZulu/Natal. I've done it twice there. Great fun, but very tiring. My first one was done with a Springbok, Francolin, and Rainbow Trout. The second, was an Impala, Guinea Fowl, and Largemouth Bass.

The original McNab comes from book a book written in the UK around 1930ish and told the story of a guy named Henry McNab (Lord Someone) who made a bet that he could poach a red deer stag, a salmon and a grouse from a neighbours property all within 24 hours...... and he won the bet.

Sadly I've forgotton the name of the book & it's author.

Cheers

I did this in New Zealand once. The idea was to catch a Salt Water Gamefish, A Rainbow or Brown Trout and Shoot a Deer. The fastest time got the most points but size and score also got points. Very confusing but Great Fun.

I caught a Yellow Eye (54lbs) at Bay of Islands, a 7.5 lb. Rainbow in a river that flows into Taupo, and shot a little spikey of a Sika Deer. All in one day!

I finished fourth.

The trick is to get the most difficult first, that is when the timing started. In our cases the Salt Water Fish. Landed it and flew to Taupo. Finished there at 2:30 and headed into the bush at Ivanhoe and called out the spikey right at dark.

Steve,

The name of the book is "John McNab" and it was written by
Scottish author John Buchan.
