Re: Mauser rifles at auctions [Re: Igorrock]

The stock is definitely pre-WW1 commercial Mauser, with the swell on the sides, the rounded pistol grip and the slender tapered forend. I have two Type B's which have exactly the same stock, one in 7x57 and the other 8x57. The 7x57 has the same style floorplate as the .333, but without a release in the trigger guard. The 8x57 has set triggers and a floorplate with lever release. (Both are pictured somewhere on the forum in a long ago post). I really like the feel of the early stocks, especially the slim forend. The bolt knob on the .333 appears to me to be 'pear shaped' commercial and not the more rounded military style.

I think this rifle may just be an early Type B that was later chambered to .333 with some changes to the sights. However, if memory serves the .333 was introduced around 1905 so it would have been contemporaneous with the '98 action and the early Type B rifles.

Of course, in my 9,3x64 Mauser barrel we could read Husqvarna...
We all know this .333 isn´t any collector item but if the next owner will change a new stock with correct outfit, IMO he (or she) would have quite a nice hunting rifle in good caliber anyway.

TO LATE - ALLREADY SOLD

Mauser African Model in 9.3x62 Caliber. Probably the Most Unique and Seldom Encountered of the
Original Oberndorf Mauser Sporting Rifles. Serial Number 116000 - 1936-37 era. Rifle has seen virtually no use. Metalwork retains 99% of is rich dark blue, even the corners of the octagon barrel show little or no wear. Wood is excellent with most all of the original finish. Very unusual to find a rifle such as this that was obviously intended for intense use to be found in this condition. Certainly a rare collecting opportunity to add this one to any Mauser collection.
9.3x62 mm 28" Octagon with full integral rib.

R. G. Owen 250/3000 Caliber Custom Kurz Mauser Sporter. Metalwork is all Mauser except for the
locking front sight hood; that is the typical Owen design. Bohler barrel and action serial numbers
are matching. Proof date of 7/26 - 6.3mm. cal. Beautifully integrated quarter rib with 4 folding leaves.
Stock work is the typical superb example of Owen's highly renowned workmanship. Serial number
10827 on both action and barrel. Zeiss Zielvier 4x has clear crisp optics. Very neat outfit.

250/3000 22" w/ 1/4 Rib with 4 folding leaves.

Not so unusual at all! The short, telescoping action of the Mauser 66 was invented in 1963 by Walter Gehmann, Karlsruhe, and patented DBPatent # 1205423. At the same time Walter Gehmann held the rights to the vom Hofe trademark and the vom Hofe proprietary cartridges. In fact, the 7x66 vom Hofe Super Express was designed by Gehmann in 1956, based on older prototypes by Wilhem Brenneke. The 7x66 SE v.Hofe was meant as a replacement of the 1931 7x73 vom Hofe SE. The belted case 7x73 needed a long Mauser Magnum action, unavailable in the 1950s. So Gehmann packed the ballistics in a shorter case that would work through a standard length M98 action without opening up. Of course, Gehmann had the rifles for his proprietary cartridges made by Mauser on his own action. BTW, this rifle was proofed HK = 1979.

Here's an enigma: an Oberndorf Mauser which, judging from the numberous visible pits, looks as though it was buried at some point and dug up, with a non-factory barrel in 8X64, and a laminated stock, which the proud seller describes as being made from "nobly figured light colored stock wood", and a one piece banded front claw mount base the like of which I have never seen before. This rifle is being bid up far above its apparent value, for some reason I can't fathom: http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=4517157

The seller has evidently had some problems with truthfulness in the past, judging from his feedback. His user name is not particularly trust inspiring: bettphannenchef (bed pan manager).

Re: Mauser rifles at auctions [Re: xausa]

Xausa, this is a prewar commercial Mauser action, rebarreled to 9.3x64 Brenneke, not 8x64. The rust pitting is a quite common sight on German guns that escaped liberation in 1945 and were hidden for several years in the most unlikely places.
These rear scope mount bases are usually found on 1960s Mannlicher-Schoenauer GK rifles here in Germany, a typical German aftermarket claw mount system like the one on my 6.5x68 M-Sch:

BTW. the sellers name is "Bettpannenchef". I would rather translate this as "boss of bed breakdown". "Bed pan manager" would be "Bettpfannenchef".

Kuduae,

This is what comes of old age and failure to check sources. My humble apologies for the mistakes you pointed out. Maybe nearing the 3/4 century mark is some excuse. Incidentally, I thoroughly enjoyed your contributions to Der Waffenschmidt!

I'm a little curious about the subject raised by Lancaster. I believe 9.3X64 required a 92mm magazine box, so some modification was likely necessary.

iirc, 92 mm is the length you need for the 375 H&H
I think you need 86-87mm for the 9,3x64 and its possible to file a standard magazin box to this length. dont know if the Mauser works ever made an original sporter in 9,3x64 because it was a Brennecke proprietary cartridge before WW 2.

CIP max cartridge oal is 85.6 mm for the 9.3x64. Jon Speed, Mauser OOSR, gives the factory magazine dimensions of commercial Oberndorf sporting rifles. 8x60, 9x57, 10.75x68 = 84mm oal. 9.3x62 = 85mm. .30-06, 7x64, 8x64 = 88mm (opened up to the front), .318, .333J, 9.3x64 = 92mm (opened up front and rear). IMHO a 9.3x64 with the bullet seated to 85.6mm CIP oal will quite well through an 88mm magazine. Even an 84mm box can be filed ot front and rear to take the 9.3x64. Of course, such a magzine will take only three of the fatter cartridges. Post WW2 many standard length ex-military 98 actions and magazines were opened up to take even the .375 H&H. Even the FN/Browning so-called "Magnum" action is merely an opened up standard length one. Mauser themselves used Magnum length actions with a 95mm mag for such numbers.
BTW that 9.4x64 rifle sold for EURO 514.99, about $ 670.-. Here are some auction photos:

IMHO the design is influenced by Art Alphin's A-Square "Hannibal" rifles of years gone by.

Apparently they did, as they listed this cartridge in their magazine dimension table. BTW, all "Original Wilhelm Brenneke, Leipzig" pre-war bolt action rifles I know about were actually made for Brenneke by Schmidt & Habermann, Suhl, eveidenced by a hidden "ESHA" stamp you find on all these famous rifles. Early postwar "Original Wilhelm Brenneke, Berlin" were bought in from Walter Röll, who continued the Mauser commercial production into the 1960s. Later ones were put together by others on FN actions.

Re ""Collection of British bolt action / takedown rifles - to be sold as a complete collection"

What I would like to know is how many are take downs
and what type of Take down mechanisms are used.

Obviously the WR is shown, I wonder of the Holland
style of stock and action coming apart is represented ?

And I can't think of the third method.

The way the ultimate price was arrived at struck me as rather peculiar. A bidder with no successful bids to his credit kept pushing the price up, until only one other bidder was active, and then, intentionally or not, successfully outbid the remaining bidder by 5.00 Euros. It makes me wonder if the seller was not employing a shill, who bid one time too often and was left holding the bag. Obviously from the number of exclamation points used in the description, the seller thought very highly of his offering.

Incidentally, I just noticed that the same rifle is again for sale by the same seller http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=4533119, and once again a novice bidder is running the price up.

There should be a way to report this kind of deception, but so far I have been unable to determine how. Egun has a way of blacklisting a buyer, but I can find nothing which pertains to complaints about an unscrupulous seller.

You got to "love" the sellers where you bid on an internet auction item, no bids since the start of the auction a lengthy period of time, you make a bid, an hour later a higher bid is made, then days later, you make a second bid, again you are bid against ... pretty obvious the seller is bidding the price up himself, using a second alias.
