Ruger No. 1 slowly disappearing?
      #230135 - 16/05/13 12:35 PM

Has anyone noticed that Ruger has seriously cut back on its' offerings for the No. 1?

For example the Tropical is only shown available in .375

I was toying with the idea of adding one to my safe in 450/400 but it looks like I'll have to buy used. Thats not necessarily a bad thing, but I'm afraid the prices will start to go up.

Anyone know anything about this?

Yes, knew about it ages ago.'

Ruger is at full production without having to bleed off
machines to make Ruger No 1's.

While everyone wants semi autos, pistols and bolt actions,
that is what they are focusing on.

They will end up going back in the future to making
more of them IMHO.

Nothing wrong with buying used, just need to find one !!!

I just picked up a red pad in 270 Win from the guy who bought it new almost 40 years ago. He even gave me the box of original ammunition (with 2 rounds left). It had a 4X Leupold on top but I put an extra 3-9X Leupold on it that I had in the safe.

It was too pretty not to buy it.

Nice looking piece of wood.

I've heard reference to the "red pad" before, but I don't know what it means. Are they just older?

I have an unfired 9.3X74 (NIB) that I bought on a whim and a No.1 B in .243 that my daughter used in Africa.

I`m glad I picked up my #1 in 303 British when I did. I tried to order one in 450/400 in January only to find out that Ruger had stopped making then and my local gun shop could not find one for me.
Oh well, the hunt is half the fun anyway.
Cazadero, let me know if you ever want to unload the 9.3.

I was shocked when Ruger discontinued the Red Label over/under and unfortunately would not be surprised if one day the Ruger No. 1 is dropped from their catalog. In my mind the Ruger No. 1 is the only post-World War designed classic American production rifle. While many of us may take this rifle for granted it represents, in many ways, the last vestige of a proud American manufacturing tradition. Although I have no statistics in front of me, I would wager that the production cost of a Ruger No. 1 in relation to its annual sales make it an increasingly targeted sacred cow among the Ruger hierarchy. I would hope Ruger would think enough of Mr. William B. Ruger's masterstroke that it continues to produce them. However a quick check of Ruger's web site indicates that the caliber offerings equate to one per variant and with such limitations it is hard for me to see a long term future for this great rifle.

I think you guys are right.
Sometimes I get awash in the search for the British single shots that I overlook the No.1.
I always tell people looking to get into collecting single shots to start with a No.1 or two to discover whether the falling blocks are really the area they want to focus on. The No.1 does 100% of what a high dollar classic will do and last I checked, dead animals don't give out style points. That, and you could have eight No.1s all in different calibers for the price of one Brit single shot!
It would be a shame if Ruger buried the No.1 but, unfortunately, that looks to be the path they are taking...

The original No.1's came with red recoil pads, this was changed later. The older ones usually have better wood as they were kind of a luxury rifle when first introduced. Many people say that they also had better fit and finish over the later ones but I don't have enough experience with them to judge.

The early ones, especially the 1970's rifles had exceptional wood for a factory rifle. In '76, they were $175.95 brand spanking new on the shelf in Vancouver B.C.

In typical Ruger fashion, they got 95% of it perfect. And I mean that as a huge compliment. Growing up, my father had a very large collection of No. 1's, so I cut my teeth with them. I remember him saying that 50% of the U.S. market thought Ruger was crazy for bringing a single shot to the market, but the other 50% were standing in line! They seem to maintain a cult-like following, and for good reason.

I never understood why they couldn't take advantage of the single shot's ultra short action length and utilize a 26" barrel for standard calibers. I admittedly have a thing for long graceful barrels on standard caliber sporting rifles. They just make great foundations. I've got a few actions stuck back for re-barreling to .303 and .256 DM with 26" barrels, make a new Fraser-style safety and sights, and some reshaping of the existing stock typically makes for a gorgeous sporting rifle with minimal work.

You could go one further and convert one to a side lever.
I know Doc Kroekel did one but don't know what the actuation design was.

Huvius,

I have seen some of those side lever conversion efforts, and they are certainly interesting in their own right. I've not seen the internals either. Now that Steve Earl has a Fraser action that is near perfect in my opinion (based on the last Fraser patent with tang safety, action mounted forearm hanger, bolted lever, and devoid of any so called "modern improvements"), I do not believe the side lever conversion to the No. 1 to be worth all the trouble. Now, that's only if one's goal is to duplicate Fraser's rifles! Again, the side-lever conversion to the No. 1 has it's own merits and cool factor for just dressing up a No. 1.

So true...
Those Earl Frasers are beauties for sure.
Looking forward to seeing some finished rifles.

IIRC a well known US smith reckoned that Rugers were a pita to get right, the split dowel pins being only one issue.

Despite the shortcomings I think it's a Gentleman's and Sportsman's rifle and it's a shame that they may disappear.

I was reading that Ruger are to bring out a limited run of the No1 in 275Rigby for the same crowd that started the run on the 303British. If they make it to Aust. I will add one to my gun safe.

I agree wholeheartedly. A 'new' #1, having decent timber and 26" tube in 7x57, or even .280 Rem. would be very nice indeed.

I have written to Ruger expressing my concern over the future of the #1 and so should everone else who enjoys a classy yet affordable affordable single shot rifle.
Ruger makes this easy to do right from their website websiteby using the "Contact the CEO" tab at the bottom of their web page.
you should also let them know that the Medium Sporter should be offered in .375 x 2 1/2" Flanged N.E.
