It would be quite interesting to test how 10,75x68 Mauser will shoot to 1000 metres....

Unusual caliber designation of "10.5" on that one. The only 10.75x68's I've seen are marked "10.75x68". So what's with the caliber?

this was the common designation in the german proofhouse system then. here you see it on rifle number 80748:

this is the bore diameter that was measure in the proofhouse with a steal plug.

This rifle is quite old, seems to be proofed in 1921.

because the 9,3x64 brennecke was sold by a gunmaker in Stettin wich was than a very important german harbour I believe we can assume it was bought for making a tour into a dangerous game country.

if you compare it with a 333 jeffery this is a very common rifle and it would be hard to find another pre war 9,3x64 again.

do you think the jeffery have the original stock? look here

Nitro, I was able to get in. You have to fill a small registration form which is not very user friendly.

There is no estimate for the .333 Jeffery but the starting bid is 240 EUR. The auction hasn't yet started according to the website.

I'm trying to understand the origin of the rifle. It appears to me to be an Oberndorf pre-WW1 Mauser Type B which was chambered to .333 Jeffery by the English trade, but I thought Rigby had sole rights in Britain to the Mauser action prior to 1912.

mckinney

What about chambered for 333 Jeffrey in Germany
and then shipped somewhere after the war ?

Or shipped to someone in the UK between 1912
and 1914 when the war started.

Lancaster

I think you'd have to take the gun / stock apart
to really know.

I can't remember seeing anything like that before
but as you know with the gun trade, anything goes
if the customer needs it in a hurry.

Sounds plausible. If we could see all the marks on the gun, we'd know more. The auction entry states that the rifle was built in 1911 and proofed in Britain in 1945, which suggests that it lived elsewhere before then. Interesting looking rifle with a lot of character.

I don't believe the .333 to be original as it is now. The action is a standard length Mauser action, but the stock is a pre-1912 commercial Mauser one inletted for an intermediate action like the ones used for the 7x57 = .275 Rigby. The front, rear sight and sling swivel bases are unlike any ever made by Mauser before WW2. The action seems to be of military production too, as it lacks the long striker nut then used on commercial Mausers. The magazine floorplate is not of straddle-type like those used by Mauser on .318 and other rifles. If action and stock were made by Mauser together the Mauser commercial serial number and proofmarks should be visible on the receiver ring, directly above the woodline. IMHO a concoction of a barreled action by some British maker assembled into a Mauser commercial stock to make a complete rifle. Fell into a similar trap once at a Holt's auction: Got an original, pre-1912 commercial Mauser stock like the one shown here, serial number 36750, wth the barreled WW1 small ring Kar98AZ 8x57IS action and British express sights.

kudae

Thanks for that insight.

Lots of "bitser" guns as I call them
are around, especially around the wars.

I'll have to have a look at a photo of
my 333 and compare.

Well, I've made a modest bid for it and will see how it goes. I don't believe it will sell for more than 700-800 Eur.

Incidentally, the other Type B from the same sale (pictured in Igorrock's post above) is in caliber 8x60S according to the auction listing.

The barrel contour doesn't seem to be a genuine "Jeffery". As stated also, the stock doesn't belong either to the "Jeffery" concept.

I can only recommed the .333Jeffery. Good caliber that still surprise. I will bring mine on my third safari in August.

..go get one

In Jon Speed book you could see pre-ww1 W.J. Jeffery .333 Mauser with all those details. But as said, the stock seems to made for intermediate m98 action which has longer front ring.

Igorrock, sure I know Jon's books, my name is on page xi (first book), vi (smalbores). Look closer, "similar" is not "the same". And, Jeffery rifles were not put together by Mauser like Rigby's were, but by unknown British or even Belgian craftsmen. Further, I miss the Jeffery adress on this rifle. It merely sais it is chambered for Jeffery's cartridge. Not all rifles inscribed "5.6x61 Super Express vom Hofe" or "9.3x64 Brenneke" were made by or for vom Hofe or Brenneke.
