This Hensoldt "Solar" with prism optics is very early. If I believe old catalogs, f.i. the AKAH one, it was already out of print by 1908, replaced by "new" Solars with lens optics. From the position of the "claws" I believe it was once fitted to a sporter on a M88 action or a Haenel 1900. At the time this scope was made the .22lr was not fully developed and mounting expensive scopes on .22 bolt action "garden" rifles would have been an outright silly idea. Such low-magnification scopes, still in a somewhat experimental stage of development, were mounted by well to do guncranks on full-bore, big game rifles then. Remember, scopes of about 2.5x magnification like the Lyman Alskan, Weaver K2.5 or Noske were regarded the last word for big game hunting 40 years later in the USA by men like Keith, O Connor or Whelen.

Because of technical and optical reasons an higher magnification than 3,5x was on prism systems not usual. Also there were several problems with the mechanical holding of the prism system, often there
were displacements in the optical axes.

The last prism solar i found in an 1905 Catalog, in 1907 catalog is the "new" Solar with lens system.

That is probably their first model of optical sight ("scope"). I had a more conventional looking model also called the "Solar" that was in the 800 serial number range. The tube was about 1.5" diameter and about 10" long IIRC. The prism cover was similar to this one, but did not project as high above the tube. I see this scope has no serial number, at least not where mine did, on the prism cover, which would indicate earlier production than mine I think.

This one has been re-blued IMO, and of course the cross hairs are not original.

According to a Zeiss corporate website I saved a copy of a few years back, the first Hensoldt prismatic appeared in 1902 and was the first prismatic sight released. I believe the Zeiss prismatic scopes started in 1903.
