Not a great fan of pinfire but that is nice - especially with the shorter rifled barrels and the very early swivel locking system and the straight stock/finger rest

I was very interested in Mick's guns similar 10 bore but decided ti give it a miss

I like but not the calibre, 5.6x50R would be better. So far the bidding is only E502.

Wonder what ammo it was regulated for?

Yes, I think it´s even possible to re-chamfer barrels for that caliber.

Heinrich Barella/Berlin BPE double rifle
http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=4904692

as a 11,6 mm it would be for the german version of the 450BPE but its not clear if for the original 72 mm long case or the 60 or 65mm long case but with 62cm long barrels I dont believe its for the 3" brass.

the very high prices are for the big Nitro Express only
I think there would be no difference between a Sauer&Sohn 450 BPE and a british 450 BPE beside of the fact that the british double rifle was maybe build in Belgium.
ok, you know how I mean it
the most valuable double rifles are the one made for indian maharajah's when money was absolutly no question. this were safe queens also the most time! the price of a double when made in the golden age will reflect to the price on the collector market today.
but there will allways be a big difference between a Nitro express double and a Blackpowder express double no matter how useful a BPE double rifle could be on most game.

Re: Doubles At Auction [Re: lancaster]
      #248536 - 06/06/14 06:34 AM

In 1977 I was working at the far western end of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. Most likely I was one of the last in the country to get my subscription copy of Shotgun News! About 2/3rds the way back there was a small For Sale ad by John Jobson, Sports Afield magazine outdoor writer. Listed among the half dozen or so rifles was a Manton & Company, Calcutta & Delhi, double rifle in .405 Winchester.

On the next mail plane off the island (mail came and went twice a week, weather permitting) was my letter to him letting him know if the .405 Manton was still available I would like to purchase it. A couple of weeks later a letter from Mr. Jobson arrived. His letter informed me I was 2nd on the list of buyers, that he had a buyer coming to see him, the Sunday after I received his letter.

I phoned Mr. Jobson that Sunday afternoon (not always easy making calls from the Aleutian Islands back then). He told me the 1st option buyer was setting in his living room and had agreed to purchase the Manton double rifle and all of the ammunition. Missed that one I figured.

About 3 months later a letter from the buyer (I do not recall his name) reached me in the Aleutians and he was agreeable to sell me the Manton .405, if I still wanted it? His letter reached me 2 days before I was flying out to the lower-48 States. I called and we made a gentleman's agreement for my purchasing the double rifle.

I drove to the seller's home in El Centro, California. We went into his game room. Three Greater Kudu, a cape buffalo, and other assorted game heads adorned the walls. Lion, zebra and other rugs were upon the floor. In a built-in glass case on one wall were 8 Winchester .50-110 rifles! Another built-in wall display case had various bolt action rifles and shotguns. He has a Westley Richards Best Grade .450 in its case resting on a side table - a treat that was. On another side table was the Manton & Company .405 Winchester double rifle, apart in its case.

As the link below shall show, exquisite fine engraving, with an urn on each side and bottom of the action. Assuredly this had been a Maharajah's tiger rifle at one time. The seller asked if I'd like to fire it? Well yah...! He provided me with 2 Kynoch factory rounds, and I stepped outside of his house and fired 2 rounds into a stump next to his pasture. A splendid balanced and handling double rifle, my first.

He shared with me that he'd purchased the Manton double mainly for the large amount of factory .405 Winchester ammunition Mr. Jobson had to go with it! He said when he would go on safari to Africa he used a Winchester Model 1895 .405 WCF as his camp gun, for baboons. He went on safari to Africa several times. For his son's 16th birthday he took him on safari. He really didn't have a strong interest in the Manton, he had his Westley Richards .450 Best Grade for his double. I had 17+ boxes of factory Winchester .405 WCF ammunition of my own (I had a Winchester Model 1895 takedown), so his keeping all but 2 boxes of Kynoch ammunition was fine with me. We were both happy n' content.

I took the Manton .405 WCF back to Alaska with me, though wouldn't bring myself to take it afield in a river boat or on a 4-wheeler for hunting. Admittedly, back the, I was in a bit of awe with double rifles! In the early 1990's it was sold to a buyer in California, through a friend of mine, and away it went. For 17 years is rested in my gun safe, even taken to the range to be shot occasionally and was appreciated greatly...I just didn't use it, then my interests drifted into Mannlicher Schoenauer rifle/carbines.

Of all things, while browsing around on the internet a month ago, there was/is, listed a Manton & Company .405 WCF for sale! Upon opening up the web site, there was the splendid Manton & Company .405 WCF double rifle that I had been allowed to be a caretaker of for 17 years. What a treat to be to visit an old friend like this. If only it could share where it's been since the early 1990's.

Thank you for allowing a bit of reminiscing here.

As far as the Holt's auction, there are several very nice rifles there, I may be tempted (as usual) but am away from that evening so it will have to be an internet bid, very easy to get carried away!

I certainly would like a conversion, they are particularly attractive to me with the percussion fences and higher hammers but the Heinrich Barella shown by Lancaster with its high enraved/shaped hammers and fences is certainly one of the best actions I have seen for a long time

Thanks Sarg
In 1978 I was down from Alaska visiting a friend in Washington State. As we were visiting, he said a gunsmith he knew had a Marholdt Peterlongo .375 H&H scoped double rifle for sale. I was a bit skeptical as we often pulled pranks on one another and I thought he was setting me up for a joke? I said something to the effect of, "Oh sure..." I then asked about the rifle being a Marholdt Peterlongo? I knew there were cartridges that carried the name but was not familiar with them as a rifle maker? He said, "Let's give Elmer a call and you can ask him about the maker." "Elmer who?" I asked. "Elmer Keith." he replied. Now I knew he was pulling my leg. He then told me to go into the den and get the address book off his desk. Which I did. He opened the pages up to the K section and there was Elmer Keith's address and phone number listed!

He called and they talked like old friends, which I found out after the call he'd know Elmer for many years prior. After a few moments he handed me the phone and I had my first conversation with Elmer Keith! What a treat. Elmer told me the English, German and Austrian double rifles were the best ones to consider. He confirmed the Marholdt Peterlongo should be a quality rifle.

My friend and I then drove to the gun shop to look at the double rifle. Very nice it was. I handled it, went over it with my fledgling knowledge of double rifles - which was really limited. I told the gunsmith yes, I'd buy it, wait a moment while I go out to my old Ford stationwagon. I came back in with a double handful of cash, laid a pile out on the counter and told the gunsmith and my friend we need to count out the right amount - which was $3,800. I had been working in Alaska for 6 years, was single, and had some dough piled up. Oh the good old days!

The gunsmith let me know the .375 H&H double had been placed on consignment by Harry Baime(sp?) who was the western US representative for Weatherby firearms. That was my second double rifle, and last, a Marhold Peterlongo .375 H&H, claw mounted scope. It handled like a fine 20 ga. Same situation occurred as with the Manton mentioned above, it stayed tucked away in the safe in Alaska!

In the mid-1990's I found it a new home with a guide on Kodiak Island, Alaska. He was going to use it for hunting, as well as having and enjoying a fine quality double rifle...as I had.

You mention a bear charge. Much of my 27 plus years in Alaska was in the central regions of the State. A fair amount of time around King Salmon, Alaska - plenty of the coastal brown bears there. Could have shot one/several, but instead, would put the sights on them now and then, just never pulled the trigger! In my mind, I shot them... Had a time or two where had close (up to 25 ft close) encounters, but all went well - whew! Would rather watch and observe them, magnificent animals.

My personal hunting is for meat. Were a trophy moose standing there alongside of a nice plump 2-year old, I'd take the 2-year old. Makes for better, more tender eating when making moose pastrami! Also leaves the older bull to spread more mature seed amongst the cows!

With caribou, my first one harvested turned out to be the coveted 'double-shovel' rack...measuring 23" high and 19" wide! Folks, that is a small caribou rack, not one considered anywhere near a trophy size, except for it being a double-shovel. Nope, didn't know it was a double-shovel when took the slack out the trigger, the Mannlicher Schoenauer 6.5x54 carbine belching flame! Only noticed the small double-shovel when walked up to the downed 'bou. As I then told my hunting buddy, "I can shoot any caribou now." "What do you mean?" he asked. "I've harvested a double-shovel rack." It's the only caribou rack I kept from my years in Alaska.

As with each of us, our mileage will vary...

Do you suppose the hammers were modified to more easily clear the scope? They certainly don't have a flowing form you would expect from Springer. Cocking the offside hammer with your right hand doesn't look like it would be very ergonomic.

That Henry is sure nice and you don't see them in 450/400 very often.

they might be original - the form makes sense when a scope is mounted. I have never seen such either.

But then a lot of work has been done on that gun:
- brand-new Zeiss scope
- the Kahles scope might be from the 1970s
- rifle barrels might be quite new and sleeved, funny caliber combination 6x52R and .22 Hornet
- if one barrel really is 6x52R (the Bretschneider cartridge) then this was done quite recently http://www.bretschneider-waffen-munition.de/Geschichte/geschichte.html
- what about the other barrel pair, shotgun barrels 32 gauge? But why the rear sight?
