Post some pictures and I will do what I can. I collected Sharps rifles for many years, when they were relatively inexpensive (1960's) I have a large library on single shot rifles.

R.S Lawrence, Didn't he patent the tape priming devise? Have had a few original sharps in my collecting days. But now like the sharps my memory is starting to go too. Al

I seem to remember the rear barrel sight being Lawrence, have to look up on the priming device.

As I understand the self primers, the Sharps used a Lawrence automatic tape primer system, revised many times from individual cap feed in the model 1849 Slant Breech Sharps rifle. the originals might have been Sharps patents, but the Lawrence being adapted later on, which used a tape-type primer strip similar to the Maynard tape primer. These changes occurred over a fairly short period of time. The cap-lock military guns of the 50's etc. used the Maynard tape priming device.

Yes - appears to be a converted caplock, probably during the 1867 Government contract, wherein the .52 percussion guns were shipped back to Sharps and were converted to CF for the new .50/70 government ctg.
Most or all conversions left the priming devices on the lock plates.
The conversion .50/70 Carbine barrel I have is stamped 1859.

Don't re-barrel it. It is to valuable as a collector. sell it and you will get enough money to buy a good shooter. Al

If you decide to sell it,I'm looking for a conversion with a bad barrel.I have a new,(old) octagon barrel, threaded for a sharps and chambered in 40-70.The barrel was made pre 1900,but never used.It just wouldn't be right to mount it on a new Shilo or C.Sharps action.

If it has a .45/70 barrel, perhaps the extractor has been altered from the original. The .50/70, original chambering, requires a different length extractor (larger diameter rim) than the .45/70 ctg.

I have an original barrel for that rifle, chambered .50/70. It is in nice shape, but has been browned & has no rear sight with it.(It's on my other Sharps)
