Newly completed DORLEAC rifle on Mauser Intermediate Action
      #229306 - 26/04/13 11:37 PM

Up to your comments, a recently finished 6,5-284 "Light Plains Game" rifle built on a 1912 commercial intermediate length Mauser Oberndorf action.
As usually on our production that superb system has been the subject of a full blue printing with nothing spared to obtain the finest base for a fine rifle.
The 25" barrel was turned from a "F" Class 1/8,5" twist match grade 34CrNiMo6 Lothar Walther blank, in a traditional D&D profile, with fully regulated four leaves express rear sight and interchangeable gold tipped caterpillar bead front.
The classic D&D slim stock with buffalo horn forend tip, trapped grip cap (with replacement front sight) and leather covered pad was made from French walnut.
Indeed we know that American taste leans toward smaller scopes on Talley type mounts, but to take advantage of that fine long range cartridge, nothing beats a top-notch European optic and a Swarovski 2,5-15x44 Z6II was chosen.
Also you must consider the amount of gunsmith work needed by the completely hand fitted complex claw mount holding a failsafe return to zero…and that rifle has been ordered by a great US hunter and collector!

Wow, that is superb, absolutely superb.
Great lines to the whole gun.

Question if I may.

Do you Colour Case Harden all your actions (as opposed to bluing them) or is that something specially ordered by a client ?

I have only seen one done before (Harold Wolf's gun)
when on Safari here in Aus and I didn't like it but
your CCH is superb, really really nice.

Your photos have now made me want to have
CCH on a bolt action

Again I must say, Just wonderful. As I live in "Light Plains Game" country I admire the choice of chambering and optics. Very well done.

To alaborate on 500's question, the Color Case on this is stunning. Is there a name or style for this pattern. This is my favorite "look" of color case, but have not been in a position to "ask the maker" before. I previously owned a Beretta mdl. 410E with the same style........ Please respond.

Color case hardening of the action is an option.
We use only the old way "bones and charcoal" treatment done to our standards by Jörg Schilling in Zella-Melhis or Conrad Recknagel in Suhl.
It's somewhat expensive and require a perfectly prepared surface. However being a true hardening, not for show only, it hardens the steel surface.

Dorleac

I wouldn't have expected anything less than the "old way".
They have done a superb job of it.

Absolutely amazing! "Well done" is not enough - yes 500Nitro - it is "superb".

Precision craftsmanship indeed.

Joel,

Do you have any pictures of a "take down" system on such a rifle?

Ozhunter,

More a "detachable stock" than a true take-down system.
We rely on the proven Mannlicher-Schöenauer original process, subsequently adapted by H&H, that guarantees unmodified headspace and accuracy.
Here, some photos of such a rifle.

Harry,
You can add that "detachable stock" to the 404...

The rear sight base looks to be one piece with the barrel?

Can this "detachable stock" easily be taken apart without damage to the screw heads?

Ozhunter,

The rear sight base is sleeved and soldered to the barrel.
It bears a recoil lug that seat in the forend.
The "detachable stock" follow the H&H pattern; we machine the rear of the action to fit on monobloc piece secured at the rear of action.
To take the rifle apart, you have to unscrew the modified captive large head front bolt and lift the barrel to "un-wedge" the rear of action.
That can be dome with a coin or a cartridge rim, even if each rifle is delivered with a special turnscrew.
Some photos to clear my fuzzy explanation.

Dorleac,

Lovely looking rifle. Fantastic fit and I particularly like the checkering and for end.
If it is not too rude to ask what is you price for a rifle such as the first one without the engraving?

Regards,
Nitro

M Dorleac

I have an action identical to this one but dated 1910. I have been reluctant to reuse the action as there are a lot of opinions about the strength of these as actions at that vintage.

May I ask if you have any heat treatment or other process applied to the action besides the case hardening ?

Thanks

Foster

Foster,

We have used many pre Oberndorf WWI actions and with careful treatment we have never encountered a problem.
We don’t consider commercial Original Oberndorf Mauser actions to be superior to those made by DWM for Brazilian 1908, Argentinian 1909 or to the Mauser "Standard Modell" made in Oberndorf that are of outstanding quality.
CZ models 24 made by Ceska Zbojovka and especially G33/40 are exceptionally good, as well as the superb Gewher actions made before WWI.
In fact the action remains a starting basis that has to be carefully blue printed.
The receiver must be watchfully checked to make sure a hazardous barrel take apart hasn’t warped it, all surfaces must be rectified and squared, threading has to been cleaned or recut and the bolt lug must be perfectly squared and lapped. It's very important to maintain a perfect lug sit and minimum headspace before going to proper thermal treatment.
We prefer surface cyanide hardening that left a flexible core with a very hard external and a true bone and charcoal "old way" color case hardening gives the same result, if well done.
Indeed an Intermediate action requires a medium length cartridge, as it would be nonsense to open it to standard length; however that left a great choice…!

Incredible rifle Dorleac, I would love one in 9.3x62!! Personally I find the claw mount suits this style of action and rifle superbly, it would be my choice of scope mounting as well.
