H&H Gunroom London.
      #228618 - 13/04/13 02:16 AM

Along with dozens of other daydreamers I dropped into the H&H gunroom today. Got to handle a .375H&H best quality Mauser '98. To be honest the action reminded me of a Zastava and the blueing was very black, not like a rust blue at all. The wood and fit though was fabulous.

It would take me five days wages just to buy a soft gun case from there. The shop was a lot bigger than I expected but only half a dozen doubles visible for sale 'off the shelf'.

Worth a visit, but for me more of a pilgrimage.

I hope you mentioned you were on the NitroExpress.com forums. Who did you speak to at the shop?

I went to Purdey in 1999. They were pretty friendly, H&H were snobby,

I will be in London in late May and would like to visit H&H and Purdey. What is the plan there. Do you just rock up or do you have to make an appointment?
Also if in Edinburgh with some spare time who would you recommend visiting?
Thanks
Rick

375Brno, give Pat Murphy a call at Hollands and tell him when you want to come, he will take you round the Brevis room below as well, give them enough warning and he will take you round the factory as well, they might charge you a nominal sum for that unless you are planning to buy a gun best, Mike

ref the "snobby bit". I have been there over 20 times and the staff are all great with me but I can sometimes understand what happens, I was in there once and some upper class english chap walked in with his gun to put it in storage. I overheard the conversation he had with the younger chap there, Andrew, "Where abouts would you like it stored Sir, at the factory, here or at the gun school ?" reply "I donīt fuc*ing care as long as you have it insured". With people like that walking in all the time I would get a little testy ! best, Mike

I have been lucky enough to visit the Gun Rooms in London several times a year for last 15 years or so . It has been my observation that they are some of the nicest people I have ever been around !!!!! Pat at Hollands has let me look and slobber over every double they have in stock !!!!! Not saying these guys don't have a bad day , but for most part they are super .
Don't forget to go by William Evans and speak with Alistar . Another super guy. A few weeks ago I dropped into Anderson Wheeler , I had never been there before but Stuart Wheeler made me feel right at home .
Enjoy your trip !!!!
Robert

The price of that rifle was 18K UK pounds. Considering it has an ex-mil action and the barrel is hot blacked, it is lucky there are plenty of uber rich Americans, Arabs and Russians to keep them in business.

I`m positive without knowing that if you are indeed buying or a repeat purchaser the licking would be far more than for some colonial tire kicker that walks in off the street.Go`s without saying really in any top end place...Its not H+H but do you remember Julia Roberts in Rodeo Dve?

As an addendum Gryph, to my certain knowledge, a gentleman called in there three years ago with his 20 year old son, soon to be 21, his father was ordering him a 12 bore O/U Royal (some 21 present !) When asked what engraving he would prefer the response from the son was "Who cares" !! Can you imagine. I would have shot the little bas**d with one of the shelf guns ! best, Mike p.s. I was there

Yes Mike it sounds like the little germ doesn't appreciate a gun at all,it will prob go into the cupboard and never be used.
I haven't forgotten your O/wood btw,its still green as.
