A nice reliable strong rifle I'm looking at useing a zastava lk m70 as the base for it I'm going for either the 375 or 416 ruger in a bell & Carlson stock with a 23 inch barrel and. A leapold 1.75 x 6 scope wat do u all think 458 win do u think it would be a good rig

What do you anticipate is your primary use for this rifle?

Ant,
For those uses i understand the caliber choices.
Hopefully those with much experience pursuing those critters will chime in.
The only thing about your options that i would change is the stock. I just do not care for a plastic stock. But that's just me.
Good luck and have fun in this quest.

To me a rifle is not complete without irons.
Even if the primary sight setup is a scope, the irons are an essential back up in case of optic sight failure.

For the money and for the performance I would be looking at a factory Ruger African in either caliber. There was a few Alaskans as well with 23" barrels.

Ant,

Sounds like you want to build something similar to what I have as my 'working' big game rifle. Mine is a Mk. X Mauser .458 WM, in a B&C Medallist stock, 24" barrel, with a Leupy VX3 1.5-5x20 heavy duplex in Warne QD's and irons as backup. I like it a lot, might not be a big-dollar rifle but it's rugged and it works.

Cheers

Those new Winchesters in say 416Rem come at an affordable price and it would be hard to fault as a "good working rifle".

Here is a photo of my Zastava M-98 .458 Win that I have been packing for thirty years and one of the new stainless 416 Ruger rifles with a slimmed down Hogue stock. Both are lightweight solid, accurate and dependable rifles.

I would much prefer the new win over a Zastava, especially with American prices for the Win M70. It is a shame the Extreme weather is not available in the larger cals.

One look at Phil's .458 proves that even 30 years of Alaska won't wear out a gun made with blued steel and wood as long as you take care of it.

Not really sure what you mean, one look at Phils rifle makes me glad I dont own it. Other than the barrel what would you expect to wear out?

I'm sure Grenadier meant destroy or ruin, not wear out. The Mauser's are tough, no doubt about that. A modicum of care is all that's needed & they come through. Pretty pampered petting rifles need not apply for real work.

save yourself time and money and get a nice BRNO ZKK (not the newer CZ) in either 458 or 375. They are a real working rifle and if you must make additions or changes it wont cost a fortune... I've shot many buffalo and dragged it though some rather horrible places and i've always been able to depend on it. i am not too worried if the stock gets scratched or rifle gets dropped. just pick it up and it still functions great...

I really like the Model 70 African models. They have a recoil lug on the barrel, are glass bedded properly, and have a Pachmyer recoil pad already installed. The sights are nice and scoping it will be a breeze. I played with one in .416 Remington and another in .375 H&H and they both fed unsized empties. They are properly proportioned and handsome. A winner by my count.

If you are a south paw you are out of luck.
