Hello all,
I have a 7x57 Oberndorf Mauser with a chipped extractor. Looks like someone didn't understand the whole "controlled feed" concept.
Anyway, the chip is large enough to affect function, unfortunately. Also unfortunately, the extractor is numbered to the rifle.
I was just going to switch extractors for now, but ideally, I'd like to find a way to use the original.
Has anyone successfully repaired an extractor chip? Any way to do so? Micro-welding and filing?
I'm going to guess that the spring steel temper is going to make that difficult :/
Advice?

Hello,
I recommend to buy a surplus military extractor and assemble it to the bolt, for it has already the correct dimensions.
The matching-numbers original extractor should be kept in your spare parts box.
Your proposal of welding and heat treatment(where to locate/buy the welding wire with the correct material?) seems to be too complicate. The filing is not the problem if you work careful and have a spare extractor for 8x57 IS at you bench, where you can take the correct dimensions and the contour.
regards Rolf
PS: Maybe lancaster can give you some more support, he is a real bonanza for such information :-)

Laser welding can be used without losing the temper on the extractor. PM me and I will give you contact information for a person that does this kind of work. ------------- GeezerD
