The only martini I know of with a safety like that is a Turkish martini and I believe it is the first model.

You have an early small frame Martini Rook rifle, either in .380 or .360 No. 5. Bore size will be either 0.375" or 0.362". They are very accurate with soft lead bullets. Have a look at Wal Winfer's new book [Volume 8] on single shot rifles. This volume covers all the hammerless and martini types.

HistoricBore,
I am picking up a copy of Mr. Winfer's VOL 8 on Monday and was wondering about your impressions of it? Also I am told that VOL 9 will conclude the series and will focus on hinge blocks are you under the same impression?
Kindest regards...

That is a sliding safety.

It is similar to but not the same the sliding safety found on British MH MKI before they were modified.

The so called Creedmore target Peabody Martini as well as the first model Turkish Peabody Martini's had the same MKI feature.

Never seen one that worked very well and definitely don't trust them. Trigger on one I have handled would not qualify. Safety on pull trigger, gun does not fire. Move safety off and the gun fired...

I'm biased about Wal Winfer's new book [Volume 8] because I have helped Tom Rowe with it over the past five years (off and on), proof-read it late last year and wrote a tiny section at the back.

However it and Volume 7 have proved to be very popular over here in olde England. The photography is stunning, and it answers many questions. Volume 9 is planned to cover more unusual single shot rifles, but ones larger than rook rifle calibres.

My Granddaughters rifle is on pg 259 of Volume 8.
