Case label removal
      #228629 - 13/04/13 06:18 AM

I have a vintage case that I need to remove the paper label of. Any suggestions as to how to do this?
Also, was Westley Richards partial to any particular colour of baize for their rifle cases 1870-1890?
Thanks,
Charls

Steam. Just like doing an envelope

Agree.

Steam from Kettle kept on constant boil
in front of it.

If you choose middle dark green you never go wrong. The sun(=light) allways fades the colour so the right and original tone is very difficult to determine afterwards. I`m quite sure those labels were glued with some kind of paste so steaming is a good way to loose it.

More than likely they were glued with the old hoofs n horns formula for the glue of old.

Could be possible too but in my guncase project (link below) the glue seemed to be bright, like casein glue. The label has been printed on so thick paper that I managed to remove it without any steaming.

steam, but use a wall paper steamer not a tea kettle

be sure it has dried for several days before you put a gun back into the case

Can't add anything as far as removal, but I'd like to know where one could get a reproduction label made - heavy paper or leatherette. I'd love to have a label for the J.P. Sauer & Sohn drilling that came into my hands a while back.

Their used to be a lot more case labels around in the past
than now. Not sure why but that is the perception I get.
