German Prince Plans To Put Bison Back In The Wild
      #227851 - 02/04/13 08:58 AM

A small herd of European bison will soon be released in Germany's most densely populated state, the first time in nearly three centuries that these bison — known as wisents — will roam freely in Western Europe.

The project is the brainchild of Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. He owns more than 30,000 acres, much of it covered in Norwegian spruce and beech trees in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Doubly excellent. Even if mere mortals never get to hunt them.

Wisents of course still exist in Eastern Europe. Rino on these forums has hunted them in the past.

If you're in Hanover, Germany, there's a Wisent breeding centre (Wisentgehege), near Saupark Springe. So you may not be able to hunt them, but you can see them and other European game animals up close. They came perilously close to becoming extinct in the mid 1900's.
