M1950 possible to chance caliber?
      #228419 - 09/04/13 06:24 PM

I've just aquired a M-S 1950 in .30-06, and would like to have a Claw-mount fitted and the barrel changed from .30-06 to 6,5x65RWS.

Can the caliber be changed withouth alteration to the magazine?

Would it likely feed slender pionted bullets well?

Would appreciate to hear from someone who has done this or similar.

Years ago I rebarreled a 1903 to .35rem. I stayed with a similar case size but with the obviously larger neck diameter. I machined the spool to accomidate and it functioned well.

On your proposal, the 6.5RWS should ride the spool well, with the neck area being somewhat smaller, may well work without any alteration.

I have not measured a 6.5x65mm case so can only go by spec sheets. It is stated as being larger in diameter at the base....???.....Possibly, possibly not.

I think I would procure some ammunition and try it thru the spool. looking at the specs, other than the .003" larger base, it should chamber fine. The body is longer, but the shoulder is smaller.

Sounds like a very worthy project.

I had a M1950 carbine in caliber .270 Winchester rebored to 9.3X62 and the magazine altered with no problems. As mentioned above, with a smaller bullet and case neck, the 6.5X65 RWS should feed with no further alterations. I hope your M1950 is a rifle, however. I would think a carbine in 6.5X65 would be truly a pain in the ear to shoot.

CAUTION here! Rebarreling a pre-war Mannlicher-Schoenauer is no big problem, as the cams which push back the locking lugs on opening to achieve initial extraction were machined inside the receiver ring. Post-war models, at least the 1952, had these cams machined as part of the barrel! This simplified production at the factory, where special tooling and fixtures were available, but it is nearly impossible for a normal gunsmith to get the barrel threads and those camming surfaces correctly shaped and aligned. I know a very good master gunsmith who told me he did it once, but would rather close shop than do it again.
Reboring to a larger caliber is not such a big problem, despite the necessary alterations to the magazine. So before damaging the original barrel, have it unscrewed carefully to check the arrangement of thos cams on a 1950.
BTW magazine aleration may be necessary for the change to 6.5x65 too, as the base to shoulder dimension, 2.12", is longer than that of the .30-06, 1.948". At least the guide ring as to be altered, and maybe even the rotor. So before starting the rebarreling get 5 6.5x65 cartridges and try if they fit into the magazine.

Thanks a lot for advice given!

It is a 1950 rifle model, but made after 1952 by the looks of it..

The .30-06 barrel is fine, so might leave as is till I wear out the barrel..
Wore out my last .30-06, before rebarreling it to 6,5x55sm.

A 6,5x65RWS in anything shorter than a 65cm barrel is too loud for me..
