1917 Enfield what to change caliber to

I just traded another rifle (savage 308) for a well done Enfield #14 1917. it is currently in 30-06 and want to have it rebarreled. I was thinking of 375 belted. Do you all have a god idea as to what to go with, and who to get a barrel from?..Thanks

I am looking at having an M17 done in 8X68S. Just to be a bit different but a 375 H&H would be good.

Yep, iiin my reading it has been converted for years with only a few issues 1) the bolt face needs to be opened up to take the 375 rim, and 2) the left frame rail has to be opended a bit to take the longer shoulder position of the 375.

My 300 H&H is a custom rifle on a M 17 action . Work well . For a 375 H&H you need a longer magazine .

You should consider the .375 Taylor (.375/.338). Same performance as the .375 H&H, but with a cartridge case which does not require magazine alteration.

Are the 375 Taylor brass or ammo available, or do you have to fireform from something else?What involved? ,I take it that it is a 388mag using a 375 bullet?

Is it still in military trim or sporterized already?

A simple rebore to a 35 Whelan is a good choice also.
But the 375 H&H is also a great choice.

I am doing one chambered in Messrs. Hollands' Super 30 to shoot a 220 grain round nose at the original velocity of 2350 feet per second. It's quite the poleax at that speed - no need for more. I'll take the case life and easy extraction. It's got a new bolt handle already and the wait is on for a 28" barrel. I do like those long barrels.

You said, "Enfield #14 1917". I assume you mean 1917 as the Pattern 14 was made in .303.

If by "done well" you mean it is already customized, then you could have a little more omph without changing the barrel by rechambering and/or reboring. Many people with 1917s kept the barrels on the rifle and had them rechambered for one of the standard .300 magnums.

If you are willing to go to the trouble and expense to do all that has to be done, then something like the .375 H&H is a good choice. I suggest you also consider the .400H&H in that event.

However, if you simply want to rebarrel or rebore to a larger caliber, why not go with something on the original .30-06 case head so you don't need to alter the bolt-face, magazine, and action? The .35 Whelen is available as a factory round and it would be great for that rifle. The .338-06, .375 Whelen, and .400 Whelen are good wildcats and some boutique ammo makers will even load those for you.

All, nice inputs, Mike I need to look into the 300 H&H ,but I had moved on to the 35 whelen many years ago after I got tired of chasing large elk here in Colorado even with a good shot placement.In fact, I no longer can hunt in the high mountains (pulmenary hypertension)....Larger is just better unless real small game is in mind. I like all of thew suggestions of the 375s as my wife will also shoot it....she shoot all of my rifles....Hmmmmm. Well the 375 are supposed to be right managable at least....Keep these ideas coming. By well done, I mean those ugly rear sight ears were machined off,the trigger done, and the front to rear aligned, and a good blue job. It does have a pristine original barrel which has had the outside smoothed. All else is stock including the cock on close. It is chambered in 30-06

If you want something with power that your wife can also shoot regularly then
the 9.3x62 is an easy conversion that requires little more than a quick rebore
