Oh wow nice looking rifle
I'm looking for a 450/400 or a 470NE because I've never shot one so I thought I get one in a No 1 first and see how I liked it and then get double.
So how heavy is that rifle and how much does a 500NE kick ? I don't want to go up to many cals in one go.
I would only be running loads suitable for a double so I won't be hotroding it.
Thanks Dave.
P.S I'd be lying if I said the 500NE hadn't come up in my mind a few times

The beauty of a single shot id that you can also load them down and use lighter bullets for practice loads.

Dave, if you get the time to attend a Big Game Rifle shoot at an SSAA range, have a chat to the boys & ask if you can shoot a few different types of rifles/calibres to see how you go. I don't know how much of the larger calibres you've fired but this is the best way for "starters", you might be lucky if they're doing an event - you might get dropped in a whole event, good crew. If you find this is the way for you then i suggest to start with a group 1 rifle & work from there. Google it & read the events etc, I'd hate to see you purchase a big thumpa & then find its not your cup of tea - work up slow. Welcome to the forum, this place will certainly make you envious. Yes you can do a .500NE on a Ruger No1...a few about in NQ Regards 93x64mm

Where in NW Queensland are you ?
The BGRC have shoots in Dalby which is so so close to the West !!! Better than Melbourne anyway !

Thanks guys I'm up on Mt Isa so a bit far from any big bore rifle club.
I have used the No1 in 375h&h and also 458win I've just never used a 500 and I'm a little unsure if its to much gun for what I want.
I want to hunt everything with it upto eliphant and hippo but also use it at home here in Au on our game.

Dave, pop in & have a chat to the boys at your local SSAA range & get a shoot calander. Yes as 500Nitro says there will be a shoot in Dalby this year Group1 to Group3, double rifle events, black powder etc - very late October, sorry I haven't got dates with me Unfortunately I can't make it this year due to family committments at that time. Have a chat to your gunsmith & see what he can do for you about info etc for these shoots. Well worth the phone call to an older Townsville gunsmith also. If you can fire a .458 OK then you are fairly immune to recoil, but if you're like me & don't get much trigger time then you won't fire it as accurately as you would like....the old addage of pratice & then more practice! Don't go too big too soon, the 450/400 No1 sounds a nice rig & you can load it down/cast etc. You're on the right path mate, just take a little more time, try a few more rifles etc & then make an informed decision. As to buying a double mate well that's one hell of a lot of money i wish i had, only a pipe dream for me that one.........bloody envious of you if you can afford one! 93x64mm

Of course it is a big drive from Mt Isa to Darwin however the BGRC Nationals Championships are on Saturday 20 July (a week earlier than planned because of a clash with the Darwin show).
Lots of shooters and lots of doubles !!

Thanks guys.
I'm not immuned to recoil I have run into a few guns I just could not get used to I owned a 460 Wetherby for a short time I don't even think I put a 50 rounds thru it I just did not like the recoil impulse.
I think recoil and what you can handle is a very personal thing and just looking at felt recoil on paper is nothing compered to getting behind a rifle and feeling how it feels to you.
I would like a double rifle but I need to buy something I can use for other things not just a one off kind of thing. I already have a 348win, 308 and 30-06 and a few other things.
I am thinking the purchase of a new built for me double rifle is going to be a once in a lifetime thing so I want to get it right.
I have been thinking I could make my 348 and my double rifle my main hunting rifles and get rid of a few others that don't see much use. I'd keep the 308 and 30-06 just because I like them but I have a few rifles I just don't use to much.
375Brno Darwin is my home town I might have to check and see what I am doing for those dates.
