Peep sights or would you keep using the buckhorns? A 250 grain Hawk or Barnes bullet and you could chase after swamp donkeys with panache.

.348 Winchester Improved - what a ROUND!!! Check out John Kronfeld's article on one in the Wolf Publishing "Big Bore Rifles and Cartridges".

Just for a ballistics taste?
250gr. LBT or Barnes 2,412fps - best of 2,530fps. using H4350
300gr. Hoch - 2,305fps.

Scovil ran the Standard .348 article and Kronfeld wrote the IMP version.

Both comprehensive articles, standard and IMP, ran jacketed and cast from 3/4" to 1 1/2".

It is a GREAT honkin' rifle.

I would rather have the 1892 carbine in .357 Magnum with 20" barrel, but for the moment I will make do with my 1894 Marlin.

Lee makes a factory crimp die for the .348 Winchester. Brass can be a problem with this round. Bullets setting back into the case due to insufficient neck tension is a common problem with older factory ammunition. Old, hard brass is usually the culprit. Annealing and crimping are necessary with this round.

If it is too much for you, I will take this trouble maker off your hands.

I am a fan of the Win 71 also. My choice is the deluxe rifle with the bolt aperture sight. That was a real woods gun.

Yup - I can see why Harold Johnson of Cooper's Landing Alaska liked them for guiding, in .450 Alaskan and .50 Alaskan.
The .50 was his end-all masterpiece chambering, using a 450gr. cup-pointed steel cored shortened .5 bullet at about 1,850fps. They were cut off just above the cannelure, then reversed so the normal bullet's boat-tailed base cup, became the bullet's nose. The weight was 450gr. Harold noted he could not keep one inside a brown bear, that all exited but due to the 'cup' point, made some wonderful cavitation on the tissue as they penetrated.

If the new 71s are as slick and solid as the Winchester originals, or the Browning/Miroku remakes from the 1980s, they are fine guns. I have a Browning carbine, in .348 WIN of course, which has now been sent off to for conversion to .475 Turnbull with a 26 inch barrel.

Don't get me wrong the .348 is a great cartridge. 270 gr bullets with great S.D. at 2150 FPS are sufficient for anything in North America. It's no wonder the gun has always been a popular carry in Alaska.

I guess like Mr. Johnson long ago I just saw potential in going a bit bigger for even more of a stopper. I look at the 71 as the ultimate development of the J.M. Browning 1886 action. I use a Lyman aperture sight on mine.

All the best.

G'Day Fella's,

Any thing that Mr Browning had some input into, I'm a total and complete fan of!
This includes these newly manufactured, Miroku/Browning made firearms as well!!!

I would like to get at least one copy, of everything Mr Browning ever designed!
Slowly getting there!!!
Further to this, there is a Winchester 1895 in .405 Win (in VGC) on www.usedguns.com.au (in the "Whats New" section), for $2850. To late if you needed it, as it looks to be sold!

By the way, I received a few 2013 catalogs from Woodleigh Bullets, thru the week.
I see they are still making a 250grn FN SN bullet (Catalog # 348), for the .348 Winchester cartridge!

Doh!

You must come around more often. Those are great photo's. Thank you for sharing these with us.

When Browning came out with the replica 71 and the 52B, I should have jumped on them. I didn't and have regretted it ever since. The Japanese replicas were beautiful renditions of these magnificent classics.
