Book on Alexander Henry British Single Shot Rifles
      #225802 - 23/02/13 08:55 AM

I am curious about opinions on the book by Winfer, "British Single Shot Riffles: Alexander Henry".

I am fan of Henry's rifles and I want to know more about him, his work etc. However, my main interest is express rifles not his single shots. Is there enough in the book to make it worth buying, or is it more a showcase book for single shot rifles?

Thank you

Chasseur - This was Winfer's first book on single shot rifles and subsequent volumes (up to Vol 7 + 8?) include many updates

A very good book for single shots, it was the most difficult for me to get to complete my set, although I understand it may have been reprinted

I love books, especially on British Sporting Rifles and would recommend it for that, but as to your original question, it does not give you anything on his express rifles especially if you mean doubles (As I am sure you know, the "express" is the cartridge)

Looking at the book now, as I write, (type?) the introduction is on general gun and rifle manufacture, especially in Birmingham, and then goes straight into the single shots

I will happily send you excerpts you wish, but with 180 odd pages, none referring to double rifles, you would have to tell me what you want

I do not know of any detailed book on Alexander Henry except this one, perhaps Curl (and others here) could be persuaded to write one!!

TH44,

Thank you for the information. I'm mostly interested in learning more about Henry and his work. My interest focuses mostly on his late percussion guns and his double express rifles.

I'd like to take you up on your offer for excerpts if you do not mind. Do you have scans of some of the introduction or some of the guns covered? I'm mostly interested to get a feel for the book to see if I should buy it or not.

Thank you again!

Perhaps the Nigel Brown book "British Gunmakers" would fit the bill better. There's a fair amount of info on Henry and the serial number ranges. Vol. 1 has more on Henry than the other volumes.
I could email pictures of the info for you?

Mike,

Thanks for the offer! I'd be curious to see photos from that book.
