TWO BORE
      #22567 - 23/12/04 05:44 PM

Have got HE 2 bore cases set up....Steel, 5 inches long,
1.225 bore. To make cases I only need lathe work.Found supply of barrels, using 30 mm barrel sections
of the same bore. In picture is case with 3500 gr bullet,
and a muzzle barrel section from a 30mm cannon, 39 inches
long. These are 250 bucks;breech sections are heavier and cost 295 bucks I think. Muzzle section has intregal flange
you see in pic, that can be use to anchor pivot pin and
lug block to barrel(silver solder) to make a break action. The block would butt up to flange so that solder
wouldn't have to hold forward barrel thrust. And remove rest of flange
not needed on sides and top of barrel..
Barrels are rifled, with deep rifling and fast twist. Me,
I would ream out to smoothbore and use cast, nose heavy foster type slugs.(reamers easy to find). The twist is fast enough to stabilize 4500 gr slugs if needed, and you want to use rifled. Muzzle section is heavy enough for
25k loads, with these super strong cases. Steel cases will last forever, probably not
needing resizing if using 10-15k loads.25k loads will give 35-40,000 ft lb loads,
if you want, in a 30 lb gun.12k loads would give 15,000 fp.
If you use the thicker muzzle section and build in a falling block,
or mount into a huge action, you could get 80,000 ft lbs,
over twice the ME.I can make cases and found big boxer
primers, that don't need adapters. This as smoothbore,
could also shoot 20 54 cal balls for a super buckshot load.
On my 4 bore progress I will have press and dies in a little
while to make 4 bore brass. And tooling is getting set
up, so 4 bore barrels should be ready to be made in a few weeks.Ed

Has anyone actualy built a shoulder fired gun using one of these cases. It would kind of nullify the questions about how bad is the recoil from 458s and the like. It would be good to see the first few 2 Bores and read the stories about what it took to build and fire them.

I do remember reading somewhere on a '(1-)Bore rifle' made in the UK, shot with BP exclusively - it was a falling block, external hammer rifle. Still trying to remember who made these...

I heard a hilarious story of a man who shot a 4 bore double at the Vintagers and it knocked him on his ass. When asked if he was alright, he replied "Yes, but I'm not shooting the other barrel" which was followed by: "You already have".

hubel458,

I don't mean to throw cold water on your enthusiasm, but wouldn't your project run afoul of the U.S. gun laws as a Class 3 destructive device (bore over 1/2")?

You may have already considered that, but if not, here is a good discussion of the NFA law:

Not as long as it is for sporting use as determined by
powers to be mentioned in the law. Or a sporting caliber over 50 cal already in existance when law took effect.
Like 577NE,585Nyati, 600NE, 700NE, 4bores, 2bores,
all over 50cal shotgun bores, etc.If not existing
before law was passed, like the 550 mag we developed the powers to be in ATF Tech branch
gave approval for sporting use, as per the one section of the law.Now if we used it in an automatic fire gun then
the gun would be class 3..Ed.

Do you have to get ATF approval before you do the project, or has ATF already given an approval on 2 bore sporting rifles?

Maybe you get the ATF man to come shoot it? The recoil would roll him back to his D.C. office.

The 2bore and many others(577NE,600NE, etc) are grandfathered in,IE they do nothing either way to a
person getting one(no $200 tax, no class 3 paper
work, etc),
is the way we understand it.There is a movement among
a bunch of us big bore nuts to get gov to just make an official list of action types, that they class as
sporting under the one section of the law giving them the
power to decide, using over 50 cal sizes;
and putting it out in a official publicized list.On
paper, official, so no gun owner would have to wonder
about it.Ed.

If I remember right Dondald Dalas tells in his new Holland and Holland Book that Holland made Sir samuel Baker a two bore.

Here is some more info on our 2 and 4 bore work,

First picture is the 30mm barrel, that will be our
two bore barrel, with a model pivot and lug
block on it, like you would use to build a break action.
Also in picture is a 2bore case,4bore case, 458WIN.

Second picture is a 2 bore case next to the 27mm
Nato case I build them from.In pic is 3006 for comparison.

Third picture is two 4 bore cases with 2000 gr Naval
Ordnance bullets, and sample 20mm case we build them out
of, and proverbial 06 for comparison..Ed

Ed,
Even just with your 4 bore those who want to go crazy are going to be able to equal power to the Solothurn and Madsen 20mm cannons

My preference would be for a 25lb double, one barrel smoothbore for 5 oz shotloads, and the rifled running at about 10,000ftlbs.

Karl.

Nice Bullet's Ed ..
Say i heard there was a fellow making you some .700
Diameter Jacketed bullet's

Hey Ed i was wondering about maybe getting a 50 BMG
box feed and pulling the barrel on it and converting it to
700 Hubel Express .
The rifle new runs about 7 1/2 k what do the bareels run and who carries the reamers for the 700 HE

I think i can get the bullets kinda cheap that is if i can drag my hind end down the stair case and in to the swage room

It's just were do i get shell cases for it ? .

Guess who
