Guild Rifle ?
      #225331 - 15/02/13 05:02 PM

Hi everybody,New to the forum. I recently purchased a Mauser sporting rifle. It has no makers name on it anywhere. It is 8x57 (.323 bore) and looks like a model B. It has a Hensoldt 4x scope in claw mounts and a single fixed rear sight with a typical Mauser ramp front sight. The receiver has no markings except for BU proof marks on the front receiver ring and a few single letter marks on the bottom. The barrel is 23.5 inches and of very light contour with an excellent bore and perfect headspace. A recoil pad had been added but, the stock was not shortened. It will be replaced with a proper buttplate. The bottom metal is military with lock screws and a single two stage trigger. Overall condition is VG to EX. I will post some photos as soon as I figure out how to do it

Welcome to the Nitro Express forum.

On such a classic rifle might I suggest a leather covered recoil pad or a red safari style from Pachmyer. When you get around to shooting this classic post some pictures please.

An older, retired German engineer I once knew once told me that if you want a gun to shoot to its full potential use benchrest dies. I have yet to prove this gentleman wrong. The RCBS benchrest dies in 8x57 are excellent.

Geezer

Does not sound like an "Original Mauser Sporter", thousands of quite high grade German sporters were made by an absolute plethora of very good makers before and between the wars, and this sounds like one of them. 8x57 was the preferred cartridge.
The vast majority used ex ordinance actions of varying quality.

Some detailed pictures will confirm....or not.

Best

Again, GeezerD, welcome to NitroExpress!
I too am looking forward to seeing your new rifle.
The so called Guild Mausers are some of the best values on the classic boltgun market.

Welcome to the forum. Congrats on the claw mounted scoped sporter. You can email pics to me and I will post them bridgepointartisan@msn.com

As for a recoil pad, this is the one I prefer http://www.csmcspecials.com/product_p/pp008.htm
Not cheap, but THE BEST in my never to be humble opinion

Caprivi - Photos sent by e-mail. My intentions are to replace the pad with a solid steel buttplate and add a steel grip cap. Thanks for the help with the photos. ------------ GeezerD

I have had a chance to disassemble the rifle and look it over. It appears that it was built with a military action. The stock cleaned up nicely and looks like it has some figure to it,but is a little dark. I am going to replace the pad with a steel buttplate and install a Fisher steel grip cap. Also, the bolt handle is a little short for my taste and has two checkered flats on it. I will replace it with a slightly longer pear shaped handle.

I have a couple of questions that maybe some of you can answer. 1. Has anybody used Iron Sight Inc. to service a vintage German scope ? 2. Have any of you tried Hawk 250gr bullets in the 8x57 ? --------------- GeezerD
