.458 Win Browning Safari
      #22507 - 22/12/04 10:56 AM

I am seriously dithering about buying a .458 Win, chambered in an old Browning Safari FN. The gun is in excellent/minty condition with 2X leupold for 1150.- Canadian. Which is about $931.-US.
The largest caliber I shoot is a 45/70 Winchester ultra-light Jap.1886 repro.,shooting 400 grainers @ 1900fps.I can handle its recoil for 20 round sessions, smeared over an hour, standing shooting from a tripod.
The .458 will be strictly a play rifle, since for me an African Safari is not in the books unless I win a lottery.
Is the stock design of the FN Browning such, that it will tame recoil or does it "enhance" recoil sensation.
I thought that the stock appears to be well enough designed and combined with the weight would tame recoil. However I never shot one of those, which is the real test.
Anyone out there that actually has shot one of those Browning Safari rifles? How do you like it, any additional comments?
Like to hear from you. Thank you

SHRIKE, the Browning FN is a nice rifle, and is well designed. The 458 is a cartridge that is prone to problems with factory ammo! The case simply doesn't have enough powder capacity to handle 500 gr bullets effeciently.

The 458 Win Mag is a fine cartridge for Canada, and Alaska, for moose, and black, and brown bear! If you handload, then the 458 WM can be a very dependable choice for your part of the country. Simply use good quality 4oo, and 450 gr soft points ,or 400 gr super solids, and load to around 2000-2150 fps, and the Browning will make you a very happy hunter! The Browning FN is a fine rifle, that you can be proud of! If you decide to go to Africa, it can be used with the loads you have, or can be converted to 458LOTT for a little cash outlay, and you can still use 458 WM ammo in it as well!
