Steel buttcap on .308 win - recoil?

Hello, I'm curious if someone have any input on a steel buttcap on a .308 win?
On one hand Im a little worried the recoil going to be much harder, on the other hand I cant imagine steel being much worse than a bakelite/hard-plastic one. Also, .308 win. Isnt the hardest recoiling caliber..

The reason Im curious is that I found a old Krag-Jørgensen stock in the attic during the christmas, the wood is too (water) damaged to restore and most metal parts are heavily attacked by rust, except for the buttcap that have this neat little "hatch" Id like to make use of.

Shot an SLR for years with one, a prick of a thing
on an SLR but you got used to it, unless the gun
was in the wrong spot and then you knew it.

You can always slip a cheap rubber recoil pad over it.

I had a nicely checkered & blued Neidner Butt Plate on my first .458 2" - looked really nice and since I was a young fellow, the recoil wasn't too bad at all. I was running 400gr. at 2,150fps, 350's at 2,290fps and 500's at 2,060fps.

So - a .308 would be easy - for a strong well muscled young fellow.

Today, I'd probably put a nice, recoil absorbing Limbsaver recoil pad on it.

I have a Garand (30-06) with a steel butt plate. It is not that bad.

Wear a shirt and just pull the rifle into your shoulder and you won't notice.

Several of my rifles, fi Mannlicher-Schoenauers in .30-06, 8x60 Magnum(S), 9.5x57 M-Sch, or a dr in .500-450 #1 BPE have steel traap-door buttplates. All with more recoil than a .308 WIN. Never noticed recoil when hunting.

I have one on my .500 NE. If the stock fits and you hold it tight, no problems. I weigh 150lbs, best, Mike p.s I doubled it once and still no pain, a bit disorientating though

I have a few ex-mil Mausers with the original stocks and steel buttplates. (I have a 308, 8mms and a 30/06.) I don't notice it when I fire them but after a shooting session (anywhere between 20 and 50 rounds), my shoulder is red and very slightly tender. Never turns into a bruise though, and doesn't put me off shooting them.

I always wondered what damage (to the shooter) doubling a 500NE would do. I see you can still type okay

The rifle in question wasn't a Merkel was it?

My biggest problem with metal or even hard plastic butt plates is that they slip around much more than a rubber butt plate. With scoped rifles, the hard butt plates can jar scopes more than a rifle with a recoil pad when you set the rifle down butt end first. Then there is the issue of the kick.

A lot of good advice here regarding steel butt plates.
My 360No.2 and my 425 Westley have steel butts. Both are pretty sharp in the recoil department but have not bruised my shoulder even when putting 10-15 rounds downrange.
My 461Gibbs has one as well and is the worst in felt recoil of the three.
IMO, a .308 should be a breeze to shoot if you follow the advice given above.

My .358 Winchester built on a 1937 Oberndorf Mauser action has a checkered steel Niedner buttplate and the recoil has never bothered me in the slightest.

In Alberta we are required to wear heavy clothing when hunting more often than not. Without a rubber recoil pad a denim, polar fleece,or Carhart jacket will make the rifle slip around like the pad is made up of ball bearings. The number of quality rubber recoil pads I have had installed on rifles has to be approaching 20. Slip around they do with certain clothing.

Worn out military steel or brass pads aside, the checkered butt plates like the Neidner, stick just as well as rubber.

Agree 100% with Mike.

Some time ago I built a gentleman a 98 Mauser in 9.3x62 that he wanted fitted with a skeleton butt plate and flat top checkering inside it. The finished rifle weighed about 7-1/2lbs all up and it was correctly fitted my client (fitted me pretty well too for that matter). Even in just a thin cotton shirt, when I zeroed the three rear sight leaves, all in one sitting (one full packet of Norma 286 grain Onyx) there were no real problems at all. I ended up with just a slight red patch right where the toe sat in my shoulder, thats all. I am a little fuller (fatter

) there than my client.

So, as Mike says, if the stock fits and you hold it right, you should have no problems with a steel butt plate on a 308 hunting rifle.

It seems that I have to check price ranges for some pattern or checkering on the buttplate. Possibly some "pull-over" as I probably need to build up the comb to use a scope anyway. Thanks for all the responce!
