have any of you seen or tried the new Winchester European claiber metric loads. I see they are loading 9.3x74R, 8x57 JR, 9.3x62 and 7x64.

http://www.winchesterint.com/winchester/metrics/

7x64 162gr 10.6g POWER-POINT® 2760 FPS

8x57JRS 195gr 12.6g POWER-POINT® 2380 FPS

9.3x62 286gr 18.5g POWER-POINT® 2360 FPS

9.3x74R 286gr 18.5g POWER-POINT® 2360 FPS

curious how these regulate compared to Norma, RWS etc. with comparable bullet weight etc.

I wouldn't fall over from shock to find out that this ammunition is custom loaded for them by either Hornady or Norma. The 8x57 is still loaded to wimpy American standards. I find it odd that American factory .303 British ammunition smokes factory 8x57 factory fodder. The old excuse that the 8x57 has potentially two different bore diameters doesn't cut it with me. The old .303 had a dozen due to the haphazard way that many were constructed.

There was a Norwegian writer who lived for a time in Kenya before moving to the USA who used to hunt safely and successfully with an older 'small' bore 8x57. He used the modern 'larger' bore ammo for years without issues as that was all he could get.

So many myths, so few facts.

The deciding factor with 8X57 ammunition is the neck clearance. In some of my "J" (.318') bore 8mm's, a cartridge with an "S" (.323") diameter bullet will not easily chamber. Obviously, forcing such a cartridge into the chamber and firing it could have catastrophic results.

Later model "J" bore rifles have chambers identical to those of the "S" bore rifles, and the larger bullets can be fired in them with impunity. If there is a question, simply determining whether an "S" bore (.323") bullet will slide easily into the mouth of a case fired in the rifle in question will settle the issue.

One way to check, is to fire a "J" bore round and try to shove an "S" bore bullet into the neck of the empty case. It will either fit easily, or not go in. If it does go in that ammo 'brand' can be fired in the "J" bore rifle.

The Winchester ammo I have seen for sale in Europe was produced in Åmotfors.

It was Finn Aagaard I was thinking of and the ammo was Czech manufacture.

Boy only 18.5grs of powder in a 9.3X74R leaves a lot of air space. Can that be correct? Or am I missing something?

I believe that is bullet weight in grams.

It is really interesting to me that WIN sees a large enough market to market these products.

It is the bullet weight in grams! The powder weight, or powder number and brand are never listed on the box of ammo. In fact the powder load and type are factory secrets where ammo is concerned. Some are even loaded with powder that is not available to the public!
