Here's my question - I've decided to buy a CZ 555 Safari in .458 Lott. I currently own a .375 H&H and love it. I've been looking for a new rifle and have setteled on this caliber - I think. My question is - how much pounding is my shoulder going to take from the Lott? Shooting the .375 certainly gets my attention but, doesn't bother me much. How do the two compare? Thanks Vlad

the lott is going to feel like about 2-375's at once I think. However don't forget one of big advantages of a lott is the ability to use plain old 458's which are much tamer. Use cast bullets and 458's for practice and the full lott to big stuff and I don't think you'll ever be sorry

go ahead and order a recoil reducer for the stock of the Lott... Compared to your 375, it's going to be a rough ride.
You're basically getting 470 recoil in a gun that weighs 3 pounds less!

AS the others said about light loads for the Lott. 66gns of Varget and 400gn cast bullets or 70gns H4895 and 300gn jacketed bullets are nice tame loads. Maybe not tame ,but certainly manageable.

IMO, 99% of shooters of big bores will do better with a 416 Rem or Rigby...The Lott is an awful handfull or recoil and simply because someone can shoot a couple of shots off hand and say "hey, thats not bad" means zilch in a hunting situation...If you can shoot it prone, sitting and bent over forward, then the Lott is a good one for you...if not the the 416 is much better...
I have been shooting big bores for years and have hunted with them extensively, but I still prefer the 416 or 404 for hunting..I even load my .470 down to 2020 FPS. and I have not experienced being undergunned for anything..
I would rather see a client place a 416 400 gr. bullet in the heart than a 500 whatever someplace it doesn't belong. It is amazing to me how many people THINK they can shoot the real big bores, then spend a hunt screwing up shots..
If you can shoot the big ones then more power to you, they work well, but at least be honest with yourself..If you have to concentrate on not flinching, then your overgunned.

Vladimir, I agree with Ray, I believe the 458 Lott kicks too much for the average shooter. We videoed everyone shooting each others rifles on our last safari & the amount of kick the Lott delivers is truly amazing. My friend is trading his 458 Lott on a 375, he seemed to shoot it much better & more comfortably (he used the PH's 375).
If you can handle the recoil, the Lott is a great load. But most of us mere mortals do better with something a bit less.
