10 Bore Purdey Style Caplock Double Rifles
      #224336 - 26/01/13 04:02 PM

This is the beginning of a new Project. I am starting the reproduction of a matched pair of 10 Bore Purdey Style Caplock Double Rifles.

I thought you guys might like to follow along.

I spent most of the week turning the barrels down and getting started on the breeches.

Just watched the 1st video, absolutely love this stuff!! Thanks for documenting this build Colin and sharing your knowledge. Mind if I ask how long you have been making guns for and how you got into 'smithing? Seems to me you're in that top 1% of people who get to make a living from something they love to do.

Re: 10 Bore Purdey Style Caplock Double Rifles [Re: Matabele]
      #224356 - 27/01/13 05:39 AM

13 years ago I apprenticed under Master Gunsmith Steve Zihn for 2 years. I built custom bolt action sporting rifles(mostly Mauser based) for about 4 years part time while I was working a full time job in industrial construction. Then 7 years ago we moved to my Families farm in Kansas(for family reasons) at which time I decided to go into Custom Rifle building full time.

After a few conversations with Steve I decided to find a niche in the market that had very little competition. There are lots of good builders out there making Kentucky/Pennsylvania/American Long rifles and Plains rifles and even a few guys who are making very good Jaeger rifles but the number of guys building Big Bores, Double Rifles and English Stalking rifles is fairly small, so that's what decided my niche in the market. The other thing is that there aren't very many guys building the obscure actions from the 1860's-1870's, like the Wesson Style Boxlocks. The Small Boxlock castings by Pete Allan are a very classy action based on the E. Wesson actions of the 1860's and they just make such a nice hunting rifle for a very reasonable price.

These days I'm kind of well known for the 2 Bores I build because I am the only guy in the world building a true(1.326") 2 Bore Cartridge rifle. There are a few other guys building muzzleloading 2 Bores but the Boxlock design is proprietary to my shop.

I get to be in that 1% of people who do what they love for a couple reasons, one after we moved to Kansas we paid off all our debts, so I have a very low overhead on my business and no other personal debts to worry about. Two, by being the first to do something I've managed to get my name and my work published in a handful of magazines and even included in Cal Pappas' British Bore Rifle book, so the publicity in the magazines helped establish my business early on. Three, I fill a niche in the market that is kind of empty for the time being. I'm sure someone out there is already looking at the work I do and is contemplating getting into Big Bore and 2 Bore rifles but for now it's a very small group.

What keeps me in business(I'm currently 3 years backlogged with orders) is that my business model is different than most other custom gun builders. For instance how many other custom builders take the time to document their builds like I do? My customers love it because they get to see how their money is being spent and it's some of the best advertising in the world for me.

Way to go, Colin. That's a job X 2.

HA! - I'm not surprised the fellow wanting 2 bores aren't lined up down your laneway - after seeing that double being proofed - My Lord it must boot one's frame with a mere 500 to 600gr. charge! Takes a SPECIAL kind of guy to want not only one of those, but what is it? 4 now, including the pistol?

Thanks for the info Colin, and I have to agree your videos of your builds certainly get you a lot of attention. All the best to you for the future! Its a small world sometimes, as I approached Steve a good few years back now about becoming a custom gunsmith and asking his opinion and advice and he was one of the nicest guys I've ever talked to, completely open and offering to help in any way he could. A real genuine kind of person.

Can't wait to see how those 10 Gauges are going to turn out!

Awesome, thanks for posting Colin! One question. How come you silver solder the barrels together and not TIG weld them with a spacer at the breech end?

Re: 10 Bore Purdey Style Caplock Double Rifles [Re: Matabele]

Mostly to avoid localized heat distortion. Using either a Furnace or an Oxy/Act(rosebud) heats the full diameter of the barrels in the soldered area and it is allowed to cool slowly, so the metal stabilizes. Whereas TIG would only effect the inside radius of the top and bottom of the quarter section of the barrel. It would then have to put in my heat treat furnace and stabilized anyways. The other reason is because if for any reason at some point in the future should the barrels have to be taken apart...welds have to be ground apart as compared to solder that can be heated up and taken apart.

Re: 10 Bore Purdey Style Caplock Double Rifles [Re: Matabele]
      #226614 - 08/03/13 12:51 PM

Due to some special circumstances with one of my customers on this project, I am going to make a special offer for one of the two 10 Bore Purdey Style Rifles I am currently building.

ONLY ONE OF THE TWO RIFLES IS AVAILABLE.

There will be a couple of option of how I want to proceed;

Option A:
I will sell this as a kit that will need to be finished by the purchaser. The kit will include the Barrels(breeched, joined, ribbed top and bottom with ramrod pipes attached, refer to videos and picture), modified lock plates and all lock internal(one Left and one Right side), Forearm entry pipe, triggers and triggerplate, triggerguard, buttplate, NECG multi-leaf rear express sight, Silver caterpillar with flip-up night sight(pearl) Front sight, Rear sling button, Ramrod w/ brass tip, Jeff Tanner Ball Mould, Tang and the Walnut Stock Blank(nice grain structure with a little bit of figure in the butt). Basically a complete kit with most of the difficult work of breeching, joining and ribbing the barrel finished…the kit would have to be completed(inletting of all parts) and then load work and regulation and all finish work completed. I will include a full size drawing with this option and would be available via phone or email to help talk you the buyer through finishing the project.
The cost of this option will be $2,535.00USD plus insured shipping.

Option B:
You can assume the place of my customer, by this I mean that I am currently 3 years backlogged but if you took over the current contract on this build you would get to be first in line as I finish this project with the matching rifle. It would not have to be a match, I can custom build this from this point forward to your specification regarding stock fit and finish(including upgrading the walnut blank if you want), metal finish(color case hardening, blue or browning), engraving can be upgraded and Checkering can be upgraded. It would still include the Jeff Tanner ball Mould and would be a finished regulated 10 bore double rifle when completed.
This option would cost a Deposit of $2,535.00USD and then depending on if you wanted any upgrades we would negotiate the remainder of the balance(the original as spec’d was to have a finished price of $3,900.00 plus shipping), I am also flexible on payment options for the remainder of the balance and would be willing to work with anyone interested in having this rifle.

Option C:
If someone wanted to buy-out just the original deposit on this project, I would then move this gun to the bottom of my build roster(3 year backlog) and give them the time to decide how they wanted to proceed with the build, including negotiating a finished price with any upgrades to wood, finish, engraving, metal finish, checkering, etc…and would work out a payment arrangement that would work within their budget. This option is a slightly lower buy in and has the ability to save up for the balance over the next few years. The cost of this option would be $1,850.00USD with the rest to be negotiated depending on your specifications.

If you are interested in any of the options please contact me via email or by phone. My contact information is at stolzergunsmithing.com . This offer will only be good for a limited time(as I work on the other one of the matched pair over the next couple weeks) and then I will proceed with the build as spec’d by the original customer and try to sell it as a finished rifle.

With regard to changes:
Basically anything that has to do with the barrels(Caliber, length, ribs, tang, rear sight) can’t be changed at this point but any changes to the stock can be made at this point. I believe I have enough material in the blank to change it to a Rigby style pistol grip if that is desired and can include a gripcap in the changes if that interests anyone.

Thank you,

Colin

P.S. I will continue to document the build of the other rifle with regular updates.

I was away from my work bench for a few days this week, it’s that time of year when certain farm chores have to be done, like burning the brush piles from all the trees that got hit during the winter storms and fertilizing the hay meadows so we have feed for our livestock next winter. I did manage to get the barrel fully inlet on this rifle though.

Fascinating to me to see how the various tools are used. Thanks again for posting Colin! How many hours do you think you are in for the one rifle so far? It would be interesting to compare the hours taken for a muzzleloader double as compared to your 2-bore double.

The offer in post 226614(above) has been SOLD.
I'm really not sure how many hours I have in so far, I haven't been tracking this build.

A bit more work this week.
